Single Tile WMS/MapServer

Is there a way, maybe with the ImageOverlay class, to do single tile WMS/MapServer calls? That is, use the extent of the viewport to request a map to overlay. This would be useful when the underlying data are not amenable to tiling. Perhaps they change too frequently or as in my case they require very dynamic label placement.

I created a leaflet plugin for this a while back, and just published it recently. It's currently in user internally, thought I don't have a public WMS service to put a demo together for it.
