The 1,899-acre Italy Hill State Forest provides an opportunity for rustic experiences due to its limited amount of development. Today, Italy Hill and all state forests in New York are managed for multiple benefits to serve the needs of the people of New York. Sustainable management practices will ensure a perpetual supply of timber, a diversity of wildlife habitats, compatible recreational opportunities and clean water.

Primitive camping is allowed. Campsites must be at least 150 feet away from the nearest road, trail, or body of water. Camping for more than three nights or in groups of ten or more requires a permit from a Forest Ranger.

Numerous guidebooks and maps are available with information on the lands, waters, trails and other recreational facilities in this area. These can be purchased at most outdoor equipment retailers, bookstores, and on-line booksellers.

I jumped into the Oregon Timber Trail with no experience bikepacking other than a single overnight shakeout trip. That said, I have 7,000 miles of road touring experience in the U.S. and around Europe, plus hundreds of hours of mountain biking under my belt. I scoured the internet for gear lists and felt prepared for tackling such a difficult trail. In the back of my mind, I also knew that if a trip-ending bike mechanical or injury occurred, that was part of the risk.

As the OTT guide says, the first four days and 200 miles (the Fremont Tier) are the toughest. After Brady broke his derailleur on day 1, Zach, JT and I pedaled onward on the remote Fremont National Scenic trail.

Miles of uphill to the top of Yamsay Mountain follow. This is a new, uncleared addition to the Timber Trail; big downed trees frequent the trail. Summing it up, a joker carved WHY in giant letters on one.

It was great reading about your ride Dakota. The parallels between our experience and yours are many (particularly the mosquito epidemic at Timpanogas Lake), and reading your trip report brought me back to many of my own experiences on the trail. Thanks for the excellent morning read!

The OTT is a scenic combination of singletrack and fire road. Apparently it sports the highest percentage of singletrack (60%+) for a long-distance bikepacking route in the United States. The full linkup blossomed into fruition in 2017 with trail work, initial riders testing the route, and plenty of publicity.

I wish there was a straight answer to that. The Dolomites are dotted with little villages, each one surrounded by seemingly endless trails and via ferratas for keen outdoor enthusiasts. Thankfully after spending two hiking seasons in this corner of Italy, I have made my top picks for this region.

The Croda Da Lago Circuit is my favorite hike near Cortina. It comes to life in October in particular when the larches turn the trail into a golden paradise. The highlight of the trail is a beautiful high alpine lake called Lago Federa. A great alternative to the much busier Lake Sorapiss trail!

Both towns are very close to Passo Pordoi, Passo Fedaia, and Passo Sella, where a myriad of hiking trails and ferratas start. The passes give access to Sassopiatto and Sassolungo, Piz Boè to the North, the entire Rosengarten group to the West, and Marmolada, the Queen of the Dolomites, to the South East.

I was wondering about San Martino or San Vito de Cadore. Cortina seemed touristy but access to lots of trailheads. Should we rule it out or consider it as we are going ? late in the season. I was thinkingSan Vito would allow us a less touristy option with the possibility of visiting the Cortina area.?? Corvara looks nice but was thinking it is at higher elevation and would be colder?

We create our Timber Series finishes by applying a unique image transfer process over a color base coat. The result is natural coloring and grain patterns. A clear top coat protects the natural wood appearance for enduring quality even when specified in outdoor applications exposed to harsh weather. We create these timber finishes with our next-generation Lumiflon FEVE fluoropolymer resin to ensure the natural look of wood will endure for decades with minimal maintenance.

Timber Series finishes are available in both our traditional core or our fire-resistant (fr) core. Easy to fabricate using standard tools, they provide the elegant look, rigidity, and feel of real wood at a fraction of the weight and without the need for weatherproofing maintenance. These characteristics make our timber finishes perfect for cladding systems, modular buildings, fascia, accent bands, canopies, column covers, and signage. Browse our projects pages to see this remarkably natural-looking finish in a variety of installations around the world.

I am immensely grateful. I am glad to have been able to contribute financially, but have not spent significant time caring for the trails. The OTTA leadership both past and present have provided clear vision, community building, trail stewardship and advocacy, making it possible for someone like me to escape into the wild on a mountain bike from one end of Oregon to the other--what a treasure. I promise to pay it forward in my work with Veterans.

There are 7 miles of soft surface including a loop around Dixon Reservoir (1.8 miles). Pineridge is the southern end of the 9.6 mile Foothills Trail. The Foothills Trail connects Pineridge, Maxwell and Reservoir Ridge natural areas. Trail markers show you the way. Biking on the Foothills Trail is for the experienced cyclist- the trail is challenging. Pineridge Trail Map >>>

On state owned forestlands, almost all timber sales are sold through a bidding process. Percentages of revenue from these timber sales go to respective counties, with the remainder allocated to the ODF State Forests Division. This revenue is used for administration, forest planning, environmental research, and water quality monitoring, among other activities, ensuring forest management provides a range of benefits.
