What's New At Agile Austin

Election.  We're now looking for those interested in running for the Agile Austin board for 2014-15.  A tentative slate of candidates will be presented at the May monthly meeting.  This will finalized at the June meeting and the election will go from that point to the end of June.  The board will be announce on July 1 and their term will go from September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015.  There will definitely be some changes this time.  If you're interested in becoming a candidate, send an email to vicepr...@agileaustin.org.

Board meeting.  For those who were unable to attend our April board meeting and are interested in what we talked about, you can see the notes here.

Meetings

May 1 (6:00 - 8:30 pm) Book Club - Thinking, Fast and Slow - 2 of 5
Bridge360, 10415 Morado Cir, Bldg I, #350, Austin, TX 78759

While not strictly speaking a book about Agile, Nobel-winner Kahnemann shares the results of a lifetime of experimental psychology research. The book is replete with insights into individual and group behavior. I notice the impact on my own behavior every day - so join us, and understand (and manage) your brain better.

Amazon link: http://amzn.to/1hFf0Ng

The Kindle version is only $2.99, the best investment you'll make this year, even if you don't come to the book club - but we hope you will.

Our first meeting was a VERY lively discussion, and we were almost standing room only! Our new host (Bridge360) is very cordial (and nowhere near the 360 Bridge, check the venue and your map!)

Provisional Schedule (note: updated, we're planning to use 5 sessions rather than 4)
May 1 - section 2

This will be a fun read, join us!

May 2 (noon - 1:00 pm) Agile Leaders SIG - Leadership Mastermind Session
CA Technologies, 5001 Plaza on the Lake, Third floor, Austin, TX 78746

Mastermind groups (known under many names) have grown in popularity as leaders like you seek to drive success through brainstorming with trusted colleagues, solving problems, generating creative ideas, designing strong action plans, and holding each other accountable. We'll briefly discuss the mechanics for forming a mastermind group and the rules of engagement. We'll then launch into a session facilitated by Pat Scherer.

Prepare for the session by jotting down your answers to the following two questions:
  • What is your biggest opportunity for advancing your company, career or other significant area of your life?
  • What is the biggest obstacle or challenge to advancement in this area?
Participation in the discussion is optional but the greatest benefit for yourself and others will come out of your commitment to participate.

The rules of engagement for a mastermind session:
Be 100% committed to your own success and that of your colleagues.
Hold in confidence everything shared in the group.

Speaker: Pat Scherer

May 6 (6:00 - 9:00 pm)
Monthly Meeting - Practicing Agile in a Waterfall World
BancVue, 4516 Seton Center Pkwy, Suite 300, Austin, TX 78759

Summary: Techniques and tools to plan and track Agile programs in a non-Agile organization

Non-Agile organizations demand timelines and status readouts that present challenges to Agile development teams and product owners.

We will walk you through techniques developed at Dell which have been used in 1.0 product releases and initial releases of products transitioning to Agile. We have used these techniques in projects with sizes ranging from 1 to 12 scrum teams and durations from 3 to 16 months.

Whether you're a large enterprise or smaller development organization, we hope some of these techniques can be applied.

Speaker: Timothy Balraj & James Watt
