Imagination and creativity come in all different forms.
We don’t often think of the requirement for creativity in our
engineers, security officers, board members, news reporters, sales
people or others. But the reality is this: every one of us needs to
exercise creativity if we want to do our best work.
Even people focused on jobs where there are specific rules to
follow or enforce benefit from innovation and creativity. We don’t
want a police officer or a judge to change the laws. But listening
to people or handling sensitive situations in an innovative way may
generate better information or build stronger trust. This is
important when resolving compliance-related situations.
So, cultivating creativity is important. Leaders who encourage
creative (but productive) solutions to every day challenges are
also preparing team members to use their creativity when a fast
solution is needed for a new problem or challenge.
Great leaders know you can’t stifle creativity on daily activities
then expect people to be innovative and open on the big issues.
Think . . . and act . . . like a leader!
