Switzerland to vote on banning banks from creating money

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/economics/11999966/Switzerland-to-vote-on-banning-banks-from-creating-money.html

Switzerland will hold a referendum to decide whether to ban commercial banks from creating money.

The Swiss federal government confirmed on Thursday that it would hold the plebiscite, after more than 110,000 people signed a petition calling for the central bank to be given sole power to create money in the financial system.

The campaign - led by the Swiss Sovereign Money movement and known as the Vollgeld initiative - is designed to limit financial speculation by requiring private banks to hold 100pc reserves against their deposits.

"Banks won’t be able to create money for themselves any more, they’ll only be able to lend money that they have from savers or other banks," said the campaign group.

Many thanks for this link.

In case this initiative succeeds it would represent a big step towards a healthier economic ecosystem, and towards taking unproductive busyness out of business. In any event, it is encouraging to see that an initiative like this is able to gather more than 100,000 supporters in a small country like Switzerland.

Yes, impressive indeed!

Going by the link below ( known as the Vollgeld initiative ) it seems this group is committed – they’ve obviously put in some solid work.
It will be interesting to see how this initiative progresses!

Yes, the people involved have done their homework and are explaining the context in a way that should be accessible to a wide audience.

The quarterly unConference on Interdisciplinary Innovation and Collaboration in Auckland covers related topics. This month CIIC explored the generation of economic value cycles without the trappings of financialised economics.
