"But the effects of basic income don’t stop with a reduction of risk. Basic income is also basic capital. It enables more people to actually afford to create a new product or service instead of just think about it, and even better, it enables people to be the consumers who purchase those new products and services, and in so doing decide what succeeds and what fails through an even more widely distributed and further decentralized free market system."

Thanks Christoph - that's a great story.

Unfortunately it leaves out a primary source of change in American (and to a lesser degree World) events.

The fact that we have seen wealth accumulate in the hands of the very rich is not a good idea that the public picked up on and supported with the money and their votes. We can promote failure as much as we like but as long as the rules of the game determine that wealth and income will always flow upward we will not be able to correct a central determinant in the deterioriation of public well-being.

American economic rules are not set up for the open and free exchange of ideas - those rules are designed to promote a wealth transfer from the public to the 1 percent.  We can try as many ideas as we like but it is doubtful we will ever come across one (like socialism for example) that ever makes it into public policy.

Not without a fight anyway.

Hi Deck,
thanks for your feedback. And yes, I agree. However, I find it interesting that there are lots of different arguments for an UBI. I figure different people need different arguments to consider the idea. And no, the UBI is not going happen any time soon - at least not in America.

cheers,
Christoph

In the old system of the last 20-40 years a UBI  would’ve made a lot of sense and would’ve been …nice

As it is we are on a trajectory of systemic collapse so those rules wont apply. In such an unfolding it is unlikely that we will be indulging in sensible and pleasant socialist strategies for collective organisation  because simply we wont be able to and we wont be inclined. Possibly when the dust settles and the pain has been enough we will hopefully embrace a society that looks like the Venus Project vision that if achieved, every bodies needs will be met without the need for clunky old money.

Cheers

Laurence
