Hi everyone! I'm new on the group and I'm interested in helping to input the Marshallese hymn book but I don't know how to get started. Also I have questions about spelling and such when the spelling in the book varies within the book and varies from the dictionary spelling.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

Marco,

Welcome to the group!  We are always happy to have more people contributing.

Have you read over the Project wiki yet?  It has some good information and may answer some of your questions.  It can be found here https://tech.lds.org/wiki/LDS_Music_for_iOS

Regarding spelling, are you saying that the Marshallese hymn book has the same word spelled differently throughout the book and you don't know which one to use?  I'm no expert in Marshallese so I can't help figure out which is right.  Is it possible that there were just some typos that need to be fixed?

Marco is marked as an "Observer" in the project – is he able to create a new issue in JIRA? Also, Marshallese will need to be added to the data entry site ( http://mitchfreed.com/~ldsmusic/ ). It's a "Hymns and Children's Songs" book with 45 songs (there isn't a regular Marshallese hymnbook or Children's Songbook yet).

I have bumped Marco up to a "Writer" on the project.

Now I think he can create JIRA issues.  Let me know if there are issues.

I doubt the published book has accidental spelling errors. The unusual spelling is probably deliberate. I'm only guessing here, but perhaps Marshallese is like German in that spelling changes when words are hyphenated at certain places (for example, "lockigen" becomes "lok-ki-gen"). The spelling could indicate that the word is pronounced differently to match the music. Kind of like "o'er" instead of "over" in English. You will find lots of non-standard apostrophes shortening words and words that are pronounced differently in certain hymns in English, too.

In German we transcribed it as it is in the hymn book. If the spelling was changed for hyphenation, we left the hyphen in (as in lok-kigen).

I hope that helps. Maybe some examples would be helpful.

I forget which one, but with another language we found that the hymnbook was using an older spelling convention, but that in the last decade or so the language had been revised. In that case the product manager asked us to stick to the hymnbook spelling. So precedent is generally to stick to what the printed version does. When the printed version is revised, we'll revise the words in the app.
