When they try to login to MLS, the list of usernames is gone. I will
have to fall back to the most recent backup that works, and then figure
out what transactions were lost.
I wonder if this will ever be fixed.
_______________
There is nothing to fix. I have many wards that have never had this
problem. In the case of the wards that have had this problem, the cause
is always the same.
The program was not shut down properly.
The last thing MLS writes is the password and login file. If the
computer is turned off before the program completely exits, this file is
not written and the logins go away.
I would suggest that one improvement could be to not close out the
splash screen until the program has truly ended. Sadly, when the
program screen goes away, things are still happening behind the scenes.
This can cause problems.
The same is true of the operating system.
But the best way to keep this problem from occurring is to make certain
that MLS has completely ended, and to shut down the computer properly so
that Java also closes properly.
If you just pull the plug you are in trouble.
If you get hit by lightning, you are in trouble.
But the latter is an act of God that you can do nothing about. [grin]
Larry Jackson
If the users shut the computer down with the power bar, you are in trouble.
I had one ward that corrupted their MLS a couple of time. I posted
clear, simple instructions on how to shutdown the computer on a small
piece of paper and stuck it on the corner of the monitor. Never had a
problem since.
In a typical ward there are several computer users. It may include
various presidencies. It only takes one dummy to mess it up.
If you open up the file C:\Program Files\LDS Church\MLS\mlslog.txt and
search on "###", you'll see who is logging into MLS when. The next
time that happens, see who was the last to log into MLS and go have a
chat with that person. Since this is stored outside of the database
area, it should still be there even after you restore.
A 16 Jan letter from the First Presidency announced a new DVD entitled
"Basic Principals of Welfare and Self-Reliance" that would be mailed soon.
Has anyone seen that yet? We've scheduled a meeting to show the DVD at and
I'm a little nervous I'll have to substitute Johnny Lingo or something like
that. . .
- - - - -
Nope. My presidency decided to wait for the DVD to arrive before scheduling
the meeting requested in the letter.

One is to create a custom list in MLS. If you are doing it for your ward
just select Head of House in criteria and in formatting select Head of House
or Head of House and spouse, address 2, city, state, postal code and the hit
the print label button on the bottom of the screen. It will print labels
using the Avery standard address labels.
Another way is to print the custom report to an excel doc and use mail merge
in word. This will allow you to use different kinds of labels or vary the
order of the name line.

If the PO Box is stored in the "Street 2" field of the Residential
Address, then Eric gave good advice.
But if the PO Box is stored in the Mailing Address that is associated
with the Household Record, then it's not straightforward, but it can
be done. The collection of Mailing Address can only be accessed within
MLS by using the Print Mailing Labels feature (or by doing the full
export of the Membership information using File > Export).
So you would go into a list such as the Abbreviated Directory of
Members. Then do File > Print Mailing Labels. At that point you can
print the list, but you can also copy the list to a spreadsheet by
clicking somewhere in the list, then doing Ctrl+Shift+S to save it to
a CSV file, or Ctrl+Shift+C and then paste the result into a
spreadsheet. Once you have it in a spreadsheet, you can of course
manipulate it, merge it, or print it however you want.

I do not think this machine has any additional components other than
what it was shipped with. Plan to look inside of it tonight to get a
better feel for what is there.
Suggestions for increasing speed or otherwise optimizing would be
much appreciated.

If you haven't already, disable the OpenOffice Quickstarter. That's
one less thing hogging time on first login.
Also defrag the hard drive. It seems better now, but I've seen issues
in the past with high fragmentation.
Increasing RAM will also help. Just be sure you do it in pairs. I
think we put in DDR PC2700 RAM (2-512mb sticks) and that helped a lot.
Either of these should help.
Good luck!

Second question that I got asked from my stake clerk is what the
minimum requirements are now for MLS. Any ideas? (We don't have a

The only published specs I know of are those published with the
Desktop 5.5 Instructions:
1GHz CPU, 256MB RAM and 10GB hard disk drive
Those are generally acknowledged to be very much on the low end, and
they haven't changed, even though MLS does continue to grow a bit as
it is updated. Most people experience significant performance gains
with 512MB of RAM, and 1GB is even better. MLS doesn't take all that
much disk space, so that's rarely a problem.

Uninstalling all of the older versions of java often provides a
performance boost as well.

Ummm, just before anyone gets any ideas, it's not allowed to accept
donated computers or purchase computers for administrative use. Your

I finally found the best method is to pull the hard drive from the
740, stick it in another machine (like a 280 we had in the FHC) and
load the disks with the internal CDROM. Then when it's time to reboot
put the drive back into the 740 and continue from there.
It's interesting to note that the Desktop 5.5 instructions have been
pulled from mls.lds.org. It was done quietly, with no announcement,
but it seems to me that this is a pretty clear indication that the
full Desktop 5.5 image is no longer recommended. As you have learned
by painful experience, it's a challenge anyway on a computer without a
supported CD drive.
The official instructions say to follow the "Dell 740 Newly Received
Computer Instructions" that are on mls.lds.org, which tells you to
install the Local Unit Security Suite, rather than reimage the
computer with Desktop 5.5. I do like the way the Desktop 5.5 image
sets up the computer, with the backup system and the full set of
settings. But given the current official instructions, I would
consider it unwise to use this out of date, no longer documented disk
image. Follow the current instructions and install the Security Suite.

I recently installed a HP LaserJet P2015d. The installation CD
installed a program called HP ToolboxFX that shows up in the lower
right hand corner of the screen as a memory resident program. Is
there a way to prevent this from starting up when the computer is
booting? I am trying to minimize all programs that are in the memory
since we have a PC with the standard 256 MB RAM.
I have turned off the OpenOffice quick launch, cleaned the hard
drives, and defragmented the hard drives (C & D.) MLS seems to
install faster now and the boot up seems to be faster as well. Still
would like to try extra memory but waiting to hear back from our FM
group/HC rep on this issue.

But you are correct in that there is an alternative. I do like the
backup system that it installs, so I'll probably still use it as a
base to build future computers until something better comes along.
I think the biggest issue with Desktop 5.5 is the need to update the
program that creates the images so that the restore will work on a
wider range of computers.
Many thanks again,

If the GX280 has SATA hard drives there would be no problem as long as the
CDROM is IDE.
As an assistant Tech. Spec. in Makakilo had a similar problem but I created
a self booting CD of the first disk with the correct SATA drivers for
included for use on the GX740's. Sent a copy to HQ but they have not
replied except to say that they have my submission.
That has been several years ago and they still have not deployed it to the
unit level.
I even made a DVD with all four disks on one, and sent that to them at the
same time.
All of my tests and uses since then work correctly without problems.

There are any number of free online hosting services that would be perfect
to share an .iso
The problem is one is sharing a licensed copy of Windows. I doubt if
that would be legal.

Create the .iso to require the entry of the license key.

All that I did was copy the original Desktop 5.5 disk with a modified boot
section to include the drivers for SATA CD/DVD ROM drives. You do not throw
away the original set just add the disk to the original collection to be
used on sata cdrom drives. Since the original and the modified are
identical except for the boot section it should be covered by the same
rights as the original Desktop 5.5... Under copyright laws are you not
allowed to have one backup that you make as long as you keep the original?
If HQ wants another copy of my DVD for testing and distribution I will
gladly send it to them if they will tell me what address to send it to.
Paul B.
The difference is in the first case the CDs were distributed by the
church though channels. In the second case you are distributing
though methods that are informal at best.
I had a problem arise yesterday with MLS. When we attempt to back up
the data, we get the following error: "An error occurred when you
tried to back up the database. Make sure you have sufficient space
on the disk you are using for the backup." MLS will not back up to a
thumb drive with 2 GB or more of space. Nor will it back up to the
hard drive. Version is MLS 3.2.1_18469. We were able to back up
fine earlier prior to the update that came in yesterday morning.
Suggestions for correcting the problem?

I have a member who approached me yesterday with a policy
question. My bishop and I looked in the CHI book 1 but didn't find
an answer that fit the circumstances. Here is the situation:
A member and her husband will be going to the temple in
September. They would like to have their children sealed to
them. One of the children is a daughter of the husband from a first
marriage. The ex-wife is not a member of the church. The daughter
is baptized and is a member of the church. (Was baptized with the
father last year.)
What is the policy on sealing of stepchildren to a husband and
wife? Is there any paperwork that needs to be filled out? If so,
where do I find it?
CHI discusses adopted children, biological children, and out of
wedlock children. I didn't see anything related to stepchildren, at
least not where I looked. Is there any written policies anywhere?
Who would be the best source of information for answering this
question? Temple president? Others?

Step children can be sealed to one parent and a step parent with the
other birth parent's permission. They (the birth parent) need to
write a letter giving consent. The letter doesn't have to be
addressed to anyone in particular but it needs to include four
names. It must have the child's full name who is wanting to be
sealed, the name of the parent and step parent that the child is
going to be sealed to, and the name of the parent giving
consent. The letter also needs be signed by the consenting parent.
Hope this helps others of you out there.

I am unable to set up an account on LDS Tech so will post the
question here. We have a member of our ward that has be called as
the branch clerk and executive secretary for the Spanish Branch in
our stake. He is needing to place a curriculum order for the Spanish
Branch on line but is unable to log in to the site since he isn't a
"member" of the branch. Since he is not a member of the branch, he
doesn't have access to the ward/branch section on the lds store
site. He tried to call SLC but apparently they wouldn't take orders
over the phone. What needs to be done at the local, stake, and other
levels to make sure he has access to the tools of his trade?
Will be sending him a pdf file of the curriculum order. Just need to
get him set up with MLS and the website.
I will be meeting with him on Wednesday to give him the information
that he needs.

The branch needs to add him as an "out of unit member" using MLS. That
way he will be officially a member of the branch (although his records
will remain in his home ward). Then the branch can add him to MLS
using standard callings as Branch Clerk and Branch Executive
Secretary. Those callings will then be transmitted to CDOL.
At that point, the Distribution Services will be able to verify that
he is the branch clerk. They will certainly take orders over the
phone; I'm sure the only problem was that they couldn't verify that he
was the branch clerk over the phone (since is isn't in CDOL right now)
and so they wouldn't let him charge an order to the branch.
I would hope that the new online store.lds.org would recognize him and
allow him to order online as well, once you've done the above steps,
but I'm not certain that out of unit members are fully supported on
that site yet.
