We just got new computers for our stake. They are Dell Optiplex 580's.
They all have Windows 7 Professional installed. In going to the church
website to download MLS and the security software etc I saw the following
message re MLS:

(Updated 7 October 2010)
(Note: MLS 3.2.3 DOES NOT support Windows 7)

I know I have seen a few messages here about running in XP compatibility
mode. Previous experience with compatibilty mode has not always been
perfect with other applications. I am a little worried about rolling
these computers out to my stake with Windows 7.

Anyone out there who can calm my fears and speak from experience?

thanks in advance
Michael

I'd suggest either waiting for MLS 3.3 (which does support WIN7), or rolling
back to WinXP.

Load MLS, then set it to run as an administrator in Win 2000

I installed MLS on a Windows 7 Starter computer and also a Windows 7
Ultimate pc to see what issues came up. It would run up to a point, that
being not being able to do a restore from backup.
After playing some more, I determined the following procedure to work for
me.
First, right click on the MLS install program, go down the list to the
properties box, click on the compatibility tab and under compatibility mode
check the box after selecting Windows 2000. Also click on the 'run as
administrator' box.

After that, it works just fine. Still play with it now and then with the
newer version of MLS, verifying that it can still do a 'restore from
backup'. This is on a stake level of MLS data.

Good Luck with your new computers.

Although MLS 3.2.3 can run with the test data in Windows 2000
compatibility mode, that doesn't mean it will work with live data.
With the test data, there is no need to do a Send/Receive, and the
communication component of MLS is what reportedly has the problems
under anything but Windows XP. So I would definitely recommend that
you stay away from trying to use MLS 3.2.3 under Windows 7.

The good news, if you can wait a bit, is that MLS 3.3 will support
Windows 7. MLS 3.3 is in an early beta, but I haven't heard of any
announced release date. I would guess it would be in the next month or
two, but that's only a guess. If you have to use the new computers
right away, I would say that your only reasonable option is to install
Windows XP, but I think it would be better to wait for MLS 3.3 and
then you avoid the hassle of installing a new OS.

MLS support should be able to answer your question. They are not available

Specifically you want "XP mode" and not "compatibility mode". XP mode
creates an actual, 100% copy of windows XP that runs within a window within
Windows 7. It is available only for Windows 7 professional or ultimate.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

At some point you will be installing MLS as a native 7 app but that's easy
to backup from the XP instance and restoring the data to 7.

Just received 3 new computers that say Win 7 Pro installed, but they come up
with XP Pro.

Does anyone see a problem with installing Win 7, especially since the
product key code for 7 on each computer is different ?? (Have already
upgraded one and it is working just fine with all of the loads and MLS 3.3)

I had the opposite issue. Ours came with Windows 7 but MLS 3.3 wasn't out
yet. So, they were going to send me an XP install disk. However, by the
time they sent it 3.3 was out.

Windows 7 has been working great with MLS 3.3. Downloaded the Local Unit
Security Software and it works fine. The only thing under Additional Local
Unit Software that didn't work was Adobe Reader but of course you can get
that off the internet anyway.

Our biggest issue was printing. We have almost all HP 1200 and 1300
printers. After installing the new Optiplex 580's with Windows 7 items from
MLS were printing extremely slow. No matter what driver we used or how I
set the driver to spool or print direct etc. Finally I decided to just
spend $9 per printer and install 64MB of additional memory. That seems to
have things back to how they were. Still not sure why printing got slower
just changing OS.

Our Stake received one with 7 licenses and XP installed too. Reloaded it
with 7 (x64) and MLS 3.3 and it has been fine for 3+ weeks. Biggest issue
would be Local Unit Support is not trained on supporting 7 yet, or at least
weren't last month.

I don't know if I'd call that a bug. Rather, it's a feature still under
development. No matter where you are in the Directory (leadership directory,
photos, another ward), the Print button currently only prints the directory
of members for your ward.

Many more printing features are under development, but the new printing
features have not been completed and deployed yet.

I knew I had seen a post from a Church employee on this topic, but it took
me a little while to find it. Here it is:
https://tech.lds.org/forum/showthread.php?4969-Photo-upload-now-available-to
-all-in-beta&p=44364&viewfull=1#post44364

That's from clear back in May, so it makes you wonder what's taking so long,
but it does confirm the basics of the roadmap for printing.

MLS prints EVERYTHING graphically, hence every print job is HUGE. Maybe
files got even bigger in 3.3. I know they're in COLOR too, so that
makes them even bigger.
It's been a while, but as I recall, the Laser Jet 4 driver (I think
without spooling) was the one that gave the best performance with the
1200 and 1300 printers. I added memory to my printers too, and that
helped some, but with the wrong driver they were still dog slow.

So loading 64-bit Win 7 works with all of the other programs?? I know MLS
works with it. It would be nice to utilize all of the memory that 32-bit
operating systems won't recognize.

One of the things that I have done is that I rarely print reports directly
from MLS. I most always paste them into a Word or Excel document as it then
prints as a text file and not a graphics file.

Actually I let Windows look for the driver via Windows Update and it found
drivers for both printers. Maybe that is the problem though(driver is from
MS not HP?)... although like I said, with added memory they are working fine

I suggest keeping an eye on this one. I am not too sure it is a Windows
7-64 bit problem.

I have yet to successfully restore a backup made in MLS 3.3.0 (the full
release, not any of the betas). I have tried at the stake level and at
two wards and have failed every time. We have been unable to move units
to other computers because of it. We are use the old Dell computers
with WinXP.

On my testing of MLS with Win 7-64bit, I had to do the following: right
click on the MLS icon, properties tab, compatibility tab, "run as" drop down
tab set back to run as Win 2000, click the "run as admin" box, apply and
close. The restore function will work now. This worked with earlier versions
of MLS, 3.2.0 and maybe even 3.1.? (can't remember that far back) on a
desktop pc and also a laptop, both running 64-bit ultimate 7.

Just as a wild guess, you might browse around looking for the data.
In MLS 3.3, the data was moved from C:\Program Files to "All Users" to
make it Win7 compatible. I wonder if it's restoring the data to the
wrong place and just needs to be copied?

that is what I have had to do. But now with 3.3 it runs a objection screen
when I log on, saying that win 2000 is not supported anymore. However, it
does allow me to log on and to restores.
