The stake has started sending the "budget" checks to our local wards. The instructions indicate the check will be deposited and recorded as income in the ward budget category. I have posed the following questions to the stake clerk and did NOT receive a definitive answer.

Question 1: Is the check deposited with only a deposit slip and the endorsed check OR do we enter the check through the donation process with the "special" deposit bag that is used for tithing deposits and then make the deposit?

Question 2: Is there an INCOME budget category in the MLS system?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Having just done this ourselves, we processed it as a donation into budget.
You can either designate specific budget categories at the time you're
entering the donation, or we simply put into Budget:General Admin and we'll
sort it out among the organizations later with transfers to specific
accounts.

You always make deposits of any check as part of a donation batch.
That's the only way the Church knows that there is money sitting in
the bank account to be processed. This check is processed exactly like
any other check from a donor, other unit, or any other source; in this
case, the "donor" is the stake.

To my thinking, the only category that makes sense for these donations
is "Budget:Budget Allocations". The reason I say that is that at the
beginning of every quarter, starting 1 January 2011, an automatic
transfer will occur into the ward's budget category for that quarter's
budget allocation. That automatic transfer will be into "Budget:Budget
Allocations". The check from the stake should be handled exactly the
same way, since it's the same kind of transaction -- it just had to be
done manually this first time.

Whatever you do with the money this quarter after it is deposited into
"Budget:Budget Allocations" should be the same as what you will do
every quarter in the future.
