> If the wife of the stake patriarch dies, do we have to call a new one?
We didn't. A man has to be married to be ordained a patriarch, but we
are not aware of anything that says he has to stay married.
There are some challenges and considerations. He usually gives
blessings in his home. There is no concern if a teenager comes with his
or her parents, or if a couple comes, or a single brother.
When a single sister is coming to receive her blessing, someone else
needs to be there.
In our case, the patriarch has one of his daughters with her husband and
family living at his home, so he schedules blessings for sisters at a
time when the family is also there.
It is a situation that the stake president carefully monitors. But to
this point, he has not felt the need to recommend another patriarch, and
several visiting general authorities have not suggested otherwise.

A new wife or a new patriarch? <big grin>

things shall work together for your good, if ye walk uprightly and remember
the covenant wherewith ye have covenanted one with another.

Uh, that would have been an apostle, and the Quorum of the Twelve has a
lot to do on a regular basis. [grin]
When there is a need for a new patriarch, the stake president makes a
recommendation to the Quorum of the Twelve. If the Quorum of the Twelve
approves the recommendation, the stake president is authorized to ordain
(it is not a calling) the new patriarch.
In this particular case, if the stake president has any questions, he is
free to call the Office of the Quorum of the Twelve and discuss it.
