Hello friends,

We wanted to introduce the LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group! We are associated with the LD4 Community and investigate how libraries can contribute to and better integrate library metadata with Wikidata to improve access to library resources on the web. We host calls every two weeks that provide an informal space to share information and learn more about Wikidata. We host Wikidata Working Hours the weeks that we do not have calls. These are a collaborative hour of editing and Wikidata practice for community and skill-building.

We recently started an additional Working Hour dedicated to Wikibase. The LD4 Wikibase Working Hour seeks to create a space for GLAM professionals experimenting with Wikibase/WBStack implementation, the software that Wikidata is based on, to learn collaboratively and share tips, tools, and resources.

The LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group has been meeting since April 2019. All of our calls are recorded and meeting notes are available on Google Drive. To receive notifications about upcoming calls, working hours, and meeting notes, you can subscribe to the ld4-wikidata Google Group. You can see our past and upcoming call and Wikidata Working Hour topics on our website. You are also welcome to join our Slack channel. The calls and Working Hours are open to anyone, so please join us and share the information widely.

Upcoming Call

We have our next LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group Call on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 17:00 UTC / 6pm CET.  It will be a crossover event with the LD4 Discovery Affinity Group! Bruce Washburn and Jeff Mixter, software engineers from OCLC Research, will talk about their approach to building out the CONTENTdm Wikibase data model outlined in Transforming Metadata into Linked Data to Improve Digital Collection Discoverability: A CONTENTdm Pilot Project and why they chose Wikibase instead of Wikidata. Then the following Tuesday, March 16th at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 17:00 UTC / 6pm CET join the Discovery Affinity Group to learn more about the project’s experimental applications that were developed to increase discoverability.
