Hey guys

I've stumbled across a couple of issues after trying to transition to training lc0 a few nights ago and thought I'd express my concerns here seeing as the forum is quite active. I hope this post is not redundant but if so please let me know as to where if anywhere I should post troubleshooting for lc0 for future reference both for myself and other peeps.

So in order to set it up I followed the guide here https://github.com/LeelaChessZero/lc0/wiki/Getting-Started-(lc0). While I ran lc0, I got the expected almost 10x higher nodes each move (about 7-10x usually) and while lc0 uses my GPU memory as expected, my cpu utilization is sky high going to 100% each time lc0 is calculating and my cpu is making screeching noises it doesn't sound very healthy for my system especially given it's supposed to be specializing for the gpu usage. For now I've postponed my contribution to the test server until I can fix this. I feel I may have skipped a tuning process or something but I have all required files and any mention of tuning in the guide goes to this not very helpful page https://github.com/LeelaChessZero/lc0/wiki/CLOP-tuning . Am I missing something? I'm using a Gigabyte GTX 1070 8GB.

On a different note, I'm not sure as to how I'm supposed to actually train lc0 as in the case of the main server where I'd just open the client. The guide says that the engine is not ready for self play but I see games being generated per day on the server and people are contributing which has me confused. I want to contribute resources to the project

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I have same problem. Some strange sound from inside computer, when Lc0 use my GPU.

Search for 'coil whine'. It's harmless.

Thanks for the input, I hope its that. Any guidance on how to contribute games to the test server?

The devs have asked for no more contributors to the test server so as not to overload it. I believe that fewer big contributors are preferable to many small contributors because of the size of the NN being downloaded each time. Making the downloads smaller is one of the main concerns before restarting the main server.

Understandable, I will look forward to the next transition to the main servers in that case whereby I can continue to contribute to the next itteration and the future for leela.

Thanks Jamie and Graham you've been great help.

I have a similar 'squeeking' type noise when lc0 is thinking, but was told it's harmless and it seems to be true since i've been running it a couple weeks without any noticable issues

What you describe is consistent with me.  Much better nps, much better performance in matches against other engines (e.g., in arena), but cannot use it for training yet.

I train using the regular gpu client but use the lc0.exe for my test matches.
