Hello

I hope your weeks are going well? Sorry if I’ve missed this somewhere in the guidance but I was wondering if it was possible to play with somebody batting on your behalf? I’ve had a pain in my arm (potentially tennis elbow) for the past two weeks and not sure it will be any better by Thursday when we’re playing our next game. I wasn’t able to play last week, as had a work trip, and was hoping it might die down in time but the pain is still there and gets worse when I pick things up and move in certain ways.

I’m organising the game as we take it in turns and at the moment we’re tight on numbers so would be nice if I can play but it doesn’t seem sensible to bat. I think that catching and throwing would be fine as it’s my non-throwing arm and I can just put myself in a more quiet fielding position.

Grateful for your thoughts on this.

Many thanks,

Andrea

Hi Andrea

Thanks for getting in touch - you are right to flag that stand-in batters haven't been covered before. The closest we have is regarding stand in runners - rule 2.2.5 https://www.charitysoftball.co.uk/page/2_before_the_game.html

We've had a bit of a chat as a committee and will put it on the list of things to look at after the season has ended so we have something in the rules for 2027. But for now, this is our best advice.

Firstly, we know everyone loves playing and when numbers are tight that there can be more pressure. BUT we do encourage you to think about whether this is practical. If you could do yourself more of an injury long term and it impacts you in other ways (needing to take time off work) that's a big risk. You might be fine, it might just be a bit of a niggle and nothing happens. But please do think sensibly about whether you should be playing

If you were to have a sub as a batter, it would need to be someone equivalent - gender and ability etc. Understandably, it couldn't be someone who would give you an unfair advantage.

Finally - in this case we suggest the ultimate decision needs to be made with the opposing captain to ensure all sides are happy with the approach.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Best wishes

Vanessa

Thanks for the speedy reply Vanessa and all – sorry to add to your list!

Really helpful guidance. I’ll check on numbers and see where we are at and will check in with the captains before as well to give them a chance to think about it. And definitely would look to have somebody of the same gender and ability if do go ahead.

Many thanks again,

Andrea
