Edward Hynes Charter School

Lakeviewʼs Only Public School

July 8, 2008

Dear Hynes Supporter:

There is an election on July 19 to RENEW four millage propositions dedicated to public education. Millages have helped fund public schools in New Orleans for more than 50 years. Superintendent Darryl Kilbert said these millages subsidize textbooks and classroom materials, teacher salaries, and facilities maintenance, for all schools, including charter schools. If not renewed, this dedicated money will disappear at the end of 2008.

The Superintendent has also assured voters that revenue generated by the millage renewal will be allocated to all public schools in New Orleans : RSD, OPSB, and charter schools. According to OPSB reports, each public school student receives approximately $1000 towards their education due to these millages.

Because the July 19 election is for a renewal of an existing millage, voter approval of these propositions will not increase taxes.  The School Board has requested the millage renewal for $32 million in projected revenues over the next 10 years, as follows:

Proposition A: $3.9 million for textbooks, technology, and classroom materials.

Proposition B: $3.9 million for pre-K; student intervention and dropout prevention.

Proposition C: $18.4 million for teachers' pay.

Proposition D: $5.8 million for building maintenance and repairs.

This millage has been renewed by voters twice before: in 1988 and 1998. Please vote on Saturday, July 19th.

Sincerely,

Michelle B. Douglas,

Principal
