One of my co-workers took a photo of this dead mountain lion this morning. It was on southbound shoulder of the 101 freeway just east of the Liberty Canyon on-ramp to the freeway. It apparently jumped the fence to get to the open space it could see on the other side, rather than going downhill to find the underpass.
I attended a presentation by wildlife veterinarian Winston Vickers on Mountain Lions in the Orange and San Diego County areas recently and learned the following:
1) proper fencing is the best way to prevent wildlife collisions with vehicles and that for mountain lions, that fencing should be 40' high. The fence between Agoura Rd and the freeway where the lion was hit was only about 5' high.
2) The vehicular death rate for mountain lions in California is greater than the death rate in any state that allows sport hunting of mountain lions.
3) Rodenticide poisoning is the worst here in the Santa Monica Mountains of all the southern California mountain lion study areas.
Sad news,
