Can not enable freetype support on Debian 9

Hello,
I'm trying to compile lcdproc on my Debian 9 HTPC box. Everything seems fine except I can't use freetype fonts.
Package libfreetype6-dev is installed but configure process always complain: configure: WARNING: freetype does not seem to be installed

I hadno issue with Ubuntu 14.04 long time ago, could you guys please take a look?
