in hell for asking one too many questions cartoon by nakedpastor david hayward

Oh, it’s okay to ask mundane questions. Questions that don’t mean anything. Harmless questions. “How many days was Jonah is the belly of the whale?” “What must I do to be saved?” “How can I serve you?” I’m not talking about those kinds of questions.

I’m talking about questions that threaten the status quo, the establishment, popular belief, or the endorsed course of action. Like some of the questions I’ve asked in the past that have gotten me in trouble: “Why is premarital sex a sin?” “Why is homosexuality a sin?” “Why would a loving God send good people to Hell just because they’ve never heard the name of Jesus?” “Why do we believe the bible is inerrant when it is obviously not?” “Why do you, as a pastor, allow people to adore you inordinately?”

Questions like that. All it takes is one of those to put you in the fire. I guess I like it hot.

Presently I find myself, like many of you, outside the institutional church. Largely because of this. But it is better to be a questioner than a member.

Do you need to talk? I’m making myself available for spiritual coaching sessions. email me. My rates are reasonable.
