Dear Students:
I know this may seem unbelievable after months of summer, but it seems the typical Amman winter is arriving tomorrow and may stay through the middle of the coming week. Starting tomorrow, the temperature will drop and we will have heavy rains, high winds with a possibility of snow. Temperatures will be at or below freezing at night. Please read the article below for a full description of the expected severe weather.
First, students in apartments should check their heat today or tomorrow and call their guard or land-lord if the heat doesn’t turn on. If you are unable to turn on your heat and/or contact your landlord, please contact resident staff.
Second, all students should exercise caution travelling or commuting to UJ for the duration of this front. In severe storms like this, streets flood and storm drains overflow. Roads are extremely slick and most vehicles lack proper all-weather tires. Leave 15-30 extra minutes to arrive on time when coming for exams.
Thirds, in the unlikely event that this front results in actual snowfalls in Amman I would like to prepare you for how we will handle weather cancellations. Because of lack of snow removal equipment and the prospect of flooding, a winter snow storm almost always results in a complete shutdown of the city. Cancellations of schools and government work can be slow or come-times confusing – therefore, please do not base your decision on whether to come or not come to class/exam on anything other than an official communication from CIEE.
If public schools are cancelled by the Ministry of Higher Ed, CIEE will cancel all classes or exams. This may happen at the last minute, but we will inform you as soon as we know by email, sms and emergency phone tree if necessary.
Any exams missed will be rescheduled on the soonest, free examination date.
It is unlikely that there will be a cancelation but I wanted to inform you of the procedures just in case!
Stay warm and dry!
