Issue with Boundary Conditions in THERM After Redrawing the Profile

Dear all,

Thank you very much for your previous assistance regarding the CAD import issue into THERM.

Following your recommendations, I redrew the profile manually and created the boundaries for each individual part. I then assigned the appropriate material to each profile.

However, when I proceed to the Boundary Conditions step, THERM displays several red circles, as shown in the attached image. I am not sure what these red circles indicate or how to correct this issue.

Could you please advise me on what might be causing this problem and how I can fix it?

You need to fill all the empty spaces with frame cavities.

You can look at the Sim Manual for examples

You can use the Fill tool, after selecting the Frame Cavity material, to automatically fill the empty areas.

Thank you very much for your reply and your helpful suggestion.

I understand that I need to fill all the empty spaces with frame cavities using the Fill tool after selecting the Frame Cavity material. However, I'm not sure how to do this correctly.

Could you please explain the steps in more detail or, if possible, share a simple example or screenshot? I would really appreciate your help.

I am still experiencing the same problem. I followed your recommendations, but unfortunately the issue has not been resolved.

The problem remains the same, and I am still unable to proceed. I have attached an updated screenshot showing the current situation.

Could you please advise me on what I should check or do next?

Few things:

 

  1. When I measure this distance therm showed 0, that can’t be right.

 

  1. When I try to move or erase some point this happened, its not normal.

 

  1. The glass thickness is 4 inches, is this correct?
  2. I don´t think you need to draw all the threads grooves.

Dear all,

I successfully imported the DXF file from AutoCAD into THERM. After that, I assigned the materials to all the profiles and defined the boundary conditions.

However, when I run the simulation, I get the error shown in the attached image. I have checked the geometry, materials, and boundary conditions, but I am unable to identify the cause of the problem.

Has anyone encountered this issue before or knows how to fix it?

Just looking at the glass thickness, it seems way too thick, ie 25 mm

I wonder if the scale was set incorrectly when the DXF was imported.

When I generate Boundary Conditions, I don't get any errors / red circles.

I do get a mesh error when I try to calculate it, probably because there is too much detail in the file.

But as Jluis noted, there is definitely something wrong with the polygons if you try to move points. 

I will look at this more tomorrow.

OK a lot of things here

The snapping problem is a bug in the snap settings.
Open the file, go to options>preferences>snap setting: turn off both "Snap to Grid" AND "Show Grid". Save, close, reopen. In 7.8.71, having "Show Grid" checked - even by itself- makes Therm want to snap polygons when you try to draw or drag points. And the setting change doesn't take effect until you save, close, and reopen. This is also why measurements appeared to be 0 inches. The measuring tape is trying to snap to the closest grid point.

The scale is also wrong and you've modeled your glazing system as a huge monolithic sheet as others have noted. Neither of those 2 things are stopping you from getting this to calculate, but just FYI.

As far as getting the model to run, you have a lot of extra points in your geometry. This is really what's holding you back. I changed the mesh parameter to 8 and cleaned up some of the overly complex detail and got it to run. I changed the boundary conditions on the frame but you can put them back to whatever you want.

Things to do now:
1. Determine the scale the geometry should be and scale it using the scale tool in Therm. Pick the mullion depth or something as your reference dimension.
2. Learn how to model the IGU (assuming a monolithic slab is not what you really meant to do)
3. Figure out what boundary conditions you want to use. I am guessing Spacer Indoor and Spacer Outdoor are not actually what you need here. Apply as necessary to the frame and glass segments. Note specifically the top edge of your IGU should be adiabatic. In your original model, you have interior and exterior conditions meeting at the top left corner of glass. That will give you trouble.

Thank you for pointing out how to work around the snap settings issue that does seem to be a bug in THERM. I will see if we can fix it.

And also for pointing out what needs to be done to get the file to simulate.

I am able to finally simulate your file, after deleting MANY points and setting the BCs to NFRC 100 Exterior for the outside and Aluminum Thermally Broken Frame for the inside

You may want to change those BCs but they seemed like a good place to start

And, as Jonathan suggested, you may want to simulate the glazing system in WINDOW and import it into the THERM model, rather than having a monolithic piece of glass. 

And I do think you may need to change the scale of your drawing. You can do that after the fact using the Draw / Set Drawing Scale option ( as Jonathan suggested), which turns on the tape measure, and you can measure a length on the model that you know, and type in that dimension, which will then reset the scale of the entire model.
