When I was out walking today, I was thinking it might be beneficial to all LBK residents if The Observer put together an article listing the “rules of the road” as it relates to pedestrians, bicyclists, and cars, as I don’t believe people always know the right thing to do.
For example:
- what is the protocol when pedestrians and bicyclists are sharing the sidewalk?
- are bicyclists aware that many pedestrians wear earbuds and may not hear their approach from behind?
- are bicyclists aware that pedestrians could get frightened by a quickly passing bicyclist? Slow down when passing!
- keep in mind that many out exercising are seniors and may have difficulty hearing or reacting quickly.
- do bicyclists have to ride with (not against) traffic? Personally I feel riding against traffic is better for my safety.
- if there is no bike lane, should the bicyclists use the sidewalk, or ride in the road?
If you agree that an article addressing these and other related issues would be beneficial, would you please use your influence to pursue it?
Much appreciated,
