Update, November 2008: I have written a very extensive review / tutorial on Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex, which was released on October 30,2008. This article covers the following topics: Wireless, Bluetooth and webcam support in live session onseveral laptops, a short installation guide, overview of new features in the latest release including tabbedbrowsing, Private folders, Guest session, Service script, Network Manager, live streaming, Deskbar, creatingbootable USB disks, multimedia support for MP3, Flash and Java, installation and use of popular software likeSkype, Google Earth, Picasa, and much more. You should definitely check this one out.

Gutsy is a vast improvement over the previous versions. It has become so friendly that veteran Linux usersmight feel overwhelmed by this friendliness, like a Thai taxi driver landing on the smoothest German autobahn. The lack of effort needed to accomplish things might dazzle the hardcore command-line fans.

This article will give you a chance to appreciate how much the Linux world has improved recently. Indeed, ithas been about 18 months since I have written my Kubuntu tutorial. It's been about a year since I haveinstalled Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft on one of my machines. Since, many things have changed, all for good.

Last November, I have installed Edgy on a brand-new AMD64 machine and been forced - not that I have not enjoyedit, mind it - to tweak quite a lot, manually configuring almost everything. This is a must for all true Linuxfans, but new Windows converts would not appreciate it.

I did not have to do any of the above. Everything worked instantly. This is extremely encouraging, especiallyfor new Linux converts, who do not fancy spending their first Linux experience in forums asking endlessquestions.

They are added automatically with the installation of new software. Quite reassuring for new users that are notquite confident about rummaging in /usr/bin and /usr/local directories, looking for the binaries.

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon comes with the superb TrueCrypt encryption software installed, allowing to createsecure volumes and mount existing encrypted shares. It took me just 54 seconds to mount my external 500GBvolume and access the data backed up there.

All that remained for me was to configure the printer (Lexmark, which has no Linux drivers), Samba sharing, andinstall VMware Server, something that could not have been done automatically, nor is necessarily the domain ofevery home user.

Below, you can read a pair of articles explaining how to enable Compiz Fusion in Ubuntu, one for Nvidia driversand one for ATI drivers. By default, Ubuntu offers some desktop effects, but for the whole deck of tricks, youwill have to install and configure the Compiz Settings Manager.

I have also installed VMware Server, which allows me to run a variety of guest operating systems, includingWindows. For anyone who really must have Windows or Windows-based applications, here's the most practicalsolution.

Compiz Fusion allows you to enjoy multiple desktops and flip them around. The Cube effect wraps the severaldesktops as faces of a 3D figure, which may actually be a cube, but could also be a pyramid, hexagon oranything else.

Fir this purpose, I have used Xvidcap, a screen capture utility, which allows you to record movies or sequences of individual frames, which you can then combine into a video. After some practicing with shooting the movies, I resized them using ffmpeg, to make the output smaller and bandwidth-friendly.

After all the praise and glory, I must mention that there are a few tiny glitches that I have encountered: theinitial 1650x1050px resolution is too big, in my opinion; the partitioner did get stuck once during the processof installation; this must never happen, especially if the user is installing Ubuntu for the first time ever.

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon has made a quantum leap in the advancement toward friendliness and usability. Old bugsare being solved, old crinkles are being ironed and polished. Each new version gains better hardware supportand allows easier integration for new users - Windows users in particular.

Compiz Fusion is a real killer. Who would ever want to buy Vista with Aero when you can have Ubuntu with awhole armada of 3D stuff for free? Oh by the way, did I mention that window borders are transparent and themore inactive the window is the paler it gets?

Helmed by Kunal Kemmu in his directorial debut, the film Madgaon Express was released in the theatres this Friday on March 22. Avinash Tiwary, Pratik Gandhi, and Divyenndu-starrer buddy comedy opened to extremely positive reviews from audiences and critics, who have praised its humour, writing, direction, and performances.

After collecting Rs 1.5 crore on its opening day, Madgaon Express took a huge jump on its second day of release and collected Rs 2.75 crore on Saturday. On its third day of release, i.e. Sunday, March 24, the comedy added Rs 2.85 crore to its earnings, taking the opening weekend collection to Rs 7.10 crore, as per the entertainment tracking portal Sacnilk.

The Kunal Kemmu's directorial debut clashed at the box office with Randeep Hooda's directorial debut Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, which also released in the cinemas this Friday. Headlined by Hooda himself in the titular role, the historical biographical film is based on the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, one of India's most controversial revolutionaries.

Madgaon Express has defeated Swatantrya Veer Savarkar in the opening weekend. The latter, which also features Ankita Lokhande, Amit Sial, Rajesh Khera, and Mrinal Dutt amongst others, has collected Rs 5.90 crore in its first three days of release, as per the entertainment tracking portal Sacnilk.

Apart from Avinash Tiwary, Pratik Gandhi, and Divyenndu, the Kunal Kemmu film also features Nora Fatehi, Upendra Limaye and Chhaya Kadam in pivotal roles. The comedy is bankrolled by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under their banner Excel Entertainment.

Amazon OpenSearch Service is a managed service that makes it easy to deploy, operate, and scale OpenSearch clusters in the AWS Cloud. Amazon OpenSearch Service supports OpenSearch and legacy Elasticsearch OSS (up to 7.10, the final open source version of the software). When you create a cluster, you have the option of which search engine to use.

OpenSearch is a fully open-source search and analytics engine for use cases such as log analytics, real-time application monitoring, and clickstream analysis. For more information, see the OpenSearch documentation.

Amazon OpenSearch Service provisions all the resources for your OpenSearch cluster and launches it. It also automatically detects and replaces failed OpenSearch Service nodes, reducing the overhead associated with self-managed infrastructures. You can scale your cluster with a single API call or a few clicks in the console.

Amazon OpenSearch Serverless is an on-demand, auto scaling, serverless configuration for Amazon OpenSearch Service. Serverless removes the operational complexities of provisioning, configuring, and tuning your OpenSearch clusters. For more information, see Amazon OpenSearch Serverless.

Amazon OpenSearch Ingestion is a fully managed data collector, powered by Data Prepper, that delivers real-time log and trace data to Amazon OpenSearch Service domains and OpenSearch Serverless collections. It enables you to filter, enrich, transform, normalize, and aggregate data for downstream analysis and visualization. For more information, see Amazon OpenSearch Ingestion.

If you start a new OpenSearch Service project, we strongly recommend that you choose the latest supported OpenSearch version. If you have an existing domain that uses an older Elasticsearch version, you can choose to keep the domain or migrate your data. For more information, see Upgrading Amazon OpenSearch Service domains.

For OpenSearch Service, you pay for each hour of use of an EC2 instance and for the cumulative size of any EBS storage volumes attached to your instances. Standard AWS data transfer charges also apply.

However, some notable data transfer exceptions exist. If a domain uses multiple Availability Zones, OpenSearch Service does not bill for traffic between the Availability Zones. Significant data transfer occurs within a domain during shard allocation and rebalancing. OpenSearch Service neither meters nor bills for this traffic. Similarly, OpenSearch Service does not bill for data transfer between UltraWarm/cold nodes and Amazon S3.

To get started, sign up for an AWS account if you don't already have one. After you are set up with an account, complete the getting started tutorial for Amazon OpenSearch Service. Consult the following introductory topics if you need more information while learning about the service:

OpenSearch Service domains automatically send metrics to CloudWatch so that you can monitor domain health and performance. For more information, see Monitoring OpenSearch cluster metrics with Amazon CloudWatch.

CloudWatch Logs can also go the other direction. You might configure CloudWatch Logs to stream data to OpenSearch Service for analysis. To learn more, see Loading streaming data from Amazon CloudWatch.

Use AWS CloudTrail to get a history of the OpenSearch Service configuration API calls and related events for your account. For more information, see Monitoring Amazon OpenSearch Service API calls with AWS CloudTrail.

Kinesis is a managed service for real-time processing of streaming data at a massive scale. For more information, see Loading streaming data from Amazon Kinesis Data Streams and Loading streaming data from Amazon Data Firehose.

Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) provides storage for the internet. This guide provides Lambda sample code for integration with Amazon S3. For more information, see Loading streaming data from Amazon S3.

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) is a web service that you can use to manage access to your OpenSearch Service domains. For more information, see Identity and Access Management in Amazon OpenSearch Service.
