SamStorms will not remember the first time I met him. I was a fly-on-the-wall local church pastor invited to join an evening discussion between Storms, John Piper, and Wayne Grudem after a long day of meetings at the Evangelical Theological Society in Toronto. I was struck by two things that night about Storms: his earnest desire for truth and his marked humility. He was glad to sit on the floor as the packed room ran out of chairs.

Although it was not the topic of discussion that night, one common denominator between those three men is their commitment to a Reformed soteriology and continuationist pneumatology. All three have written extensively on these topics, and as the dedication of a recent book by Tom Schreiner indicates, all three hold a leading place in the Reformed continuationist corner of Christianity.

The prayer described in chapter two needs further definition, which comes from understanding the three different forms of faith: converting faith, continuing faith (our general daily confidence in God), and charismatic faith. Storms writes,

[Charismatic faith] is that sudden, supernatural surge of confident assurance that God is going to do something right now, right here. . . . This expression of faith is a unique gift that is not universal for all believers, but given sovereignly by the Lord to specific individuals on particular occasions.

If someone did hear from God and the word bore special importance for a particular individual, take time to pray this truth into their life. Either gather around that person or, better still, have them sit in the chair in the middle of the room while others lay hands on them and ask the Spirit to bring insight into the full meaning of the prophetic word and how the person in view might properly respond to what was said.

On occasion you will experience an immediate check or hesitation in your heart regarding the authenticity of an utterance that purports to be from God. This does not mean you are by nature a cynic or that you doubt the validity of the gift of prophecy. It more likely indicates that your knowledge of Scripture, together with common sense, has detected something amiss in what was said.

Storms has written elsewhere (Tough Topics, Crossway) that Christians can be demonized. What he tackles in this chapter (in line with the aim of the book) is how demonized Christians should be delivered. Those familiar with the John Wimber and Neil Anderson material on demon possession and deliverance will find significant overlap here, albeit with some distinctions.

There is no explicit reference in the New Testament to a spiritual gift of deliverance. I just say, however, that I have known several individuals who have demonstrated a powerful, extraordinarily authoritative, and undeniably effective ministry in helping others find freedom from demonic oppression.

[it is] a unique ability that is fundamentally intuitive or subjective in nature, a Spirit-energized ability that is only given to some in the body of Christ, not all. . . a supernaturally enabled sense of feeling concerning the nature and source of any particular spirit under consideration.

Steve Timmis has already written about what he feels are insertions of non-biblical ideas into the biblical data. (Storms responded here.) Tim Challies has also noted his apprehension over omitted texts. (Storms responded here.)

It is interesting how a big life challenge can illuminate little things in our lives we are so thankful for or maybe have taken for granted. I think it was, in part, my diagnosis of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), and the years of treatment and recurrences that followed that showed me how transformational practicing gratitude can be in our day-to-day lives.

Gratitude can have a significant impact on our mindset, our physical bodies and ultimately our over all well being. Studies show that gratitude increases our resiliency making us better able to cope with the changes around us, improves sleep, increases feelings of happiness, decreases anxiety and can even decrease blood pressure.

Posting on social media can be a great way to share about your 30 days, but it is not essential. This year, I am posting less frequently, but still practicing gratefulness every day through journaling or sending a thank you card to a friend.

I acknowledge and in no way want to diminish the many emotions that can be associated with challenging times in life. Having gone through a cancer diagnosis, neurosurgery, several recurrences, chemotherapy, and radiation, I am all too familiar with the difficulties that can be associated for both patient and loved ones. For more about my cancer journey, read More Than a Conqueror.

The more we think a certain way, the more naturally that way of thinking comes to us. Every time we have a negative thought, it reinforces itself. The good news is the same is true for positive thoughts.

Giving thanks is a choice. This does take practice and intentionality, but you will find that the posture of gratitude has a ripple effect throughout your life. When we focus on the good and give thanks for what you have, it seems to blur and put into perspective the bad. It turns what we have into enough and allows us to acknowledge, celebrate and embrace the good.

Some people like to start or finish their days with a healthy habit of listing three new things they are thankful for that day. One of my favorites is creating a gratitude jar, filling it with little reminders of things you are thankful for; then, when you are feeling down you can pick a note from the jar to infuse a little cheer and warmth into your day.

For me, as a person who loves God and has a relationship with him, thankfulness is something that helps give me hope. When I realize how big God is and how plentiful his provisions are it helps me see how small my complaints are in comparison.

The benefits of practicing gratitude have become pretty popular in the health and wellness industry. However, when you read the Bible, you see God has been pointing to these benefits for thousands of years.

What I love about these words is how they remind us to practice gratitude while at the same time encouraging us to bring or requests to God. We can face a lot of troubles in this life, and I am thankful we can always ask God for help.

We have all been through a lot the few years with Covid-19 and a variety of other challenges in our country and abroad. Yet, despite what this season has brought, we still have so much to be thankful for.

When we take the time to pause and reflect, we will find there truly is always something to cherish. Something that brings us joy. Something to celebrate. Someone we are grateful to or someone we are grateful for.

Performing a power-off 180 is just what it sounds like. Abeam an aiming point on downwind, engine power is cut to idle (at or below 1000 feet AGL per ACS standards), and you maneuver to land as close to that preselected point as possible. Most pilots pitch for best glide speed, at least initially, to improve chances of making the runway point.

While it's not usually a required maneuver for private pilots, it's a great maneuver to practice for any pilot. The ACS has the following standards for maneuver completion: "Touch down within -0/+200 feet from the specified touchdown point with no side drift, minimum float, and with the airplane's longitudinal axis aligned with and over the runway centerline."

Unless you fly in North Dakota, you can't just land anywhere. Water, forests, and densely populated areas make emergency landings tough. While power-off 180s may not accurately depict real-life landing conditions, they do hone in the importance of landing on a pre-selected spot.

Your goal during a power-off emergency landing is a descent to landing following the format of a traffic pattern. Straight-in power-off approaches are dangerous, because you start farther away from your landing point, and it's difficult to judge glide and sink rate.

Headwinds, tailwinds, and crosswinds provide unique challenges when flying power-off 180s. Unlike a normal approach, you don't have the backup of adding power to adjust for poorly anticipated wind conditions. The power-off 180 is the perfect way to learn how to control your descent path, while adjusting to compensate for wind.
