Shelter Prepares For Facility Repairs,
Needs Short-Term Foster Homes for Dogs
We've got kennel floors to repair, so we're asking you for help by fostering shelter dogs while work is performed to improve the facility. An area that houses dogs will need to remain empty for five full days, September 12-16, while concrete floors are sanded and re-painted.
Our "Five Days For Fido" campaign aims to draw attention to this critical need and secure sufficient housing for the displaced canines. If you have a dog, we will match you up with a temporary playmate for him or her. If you don't have a dog, this is a great opportunity to enjoy some canine companionship without a long-term commitment.
In addition to attending one fostering information session, prospective foster parents will need to complete a Kansas State Shelter Foster Home Application and agree to provide at least five consecutive days of in-home care for a shelter dog. No advanced application is required to provide a foster home. Each dog has been spayed or neutered, heartworm tested, vaccinated, microchipped, and comes with a collar, leash, and pet food provided by Hill's Pet Nutrition. For more information, and to volunteer for the "Five Days For Fido" campaign, please send an e-mail to volu...@Lawrencehumane.or or call the animal shelter at 785-843-6835 during business hours.

- Help at the start of our event, such as greeters, raffle-ticket sellers, set-up crews, and check-in representatives for shifts beginning at 5 p.m.
- Work the check-out lines starting around 6:30 p.m. We also need runners and other volunteers to assist in the middle of the evening.
- Attend the auction and stick around to help: Tear-down crews would be very much appreciated later in the evening.
Volunteers will need to attend training the night before the auction, 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 29. Pizza will be provided! If you can help this year please email us to learn more about volunteer opportunities at the Pawsible Dream!

Numbers Show More Pets Matched with Homes
Revised shelter operations and adoption promotions have resulted in increased animal placements and decreased euthanasia at the Lawrence Humane Society. According to Dori Villalon, executive director, a statistical comparison of January-July 2011 versus the same period last year reveals an increased live release rate for both cats (35 percent) and dogs (1.2 percent). During the same period, euthanasia rates dropped by 29% and 50% for cats and dogs, respectively. See the story, including video at Channel 6 News Lawrence

Stuff We Need
Flat-panel computer monitors: We are very close to completion of a major technology upgrade at the shelter. Our animal admissions, record keeping and medical care will be managed by professional shelter software! Moving our data away from paper will reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve the lives of pets in our care. We are in need of four (4) flat-panel monitors for our computers (19 inch models preferred). If you or someone you know has one available to donate, please e-mail us. We will provide you with an official receipt for tax purposes, too. Please note: we cannot accept the older CRT monitors.
All gifts to the Lawrence Humane Society are greatly appreciated and help us provide outstanding care and sheltering for the animals.
Here are some other items we can use, if you're out at the store and want to grab extra for us: laundry detergent, bleach, cat litter, and blue Dawn dish detergent. Or, save yourself the trouble – make a donation (at right) to our general fund and help us buy these items in bulk. Donations of $5 and $10 to $100 or more are greatly appreciated – every dollar helps!
In-Kind Donation Update:
The shelter cannot accept newspaper or pet food donations due to storage and handling limitations. However, there are other organizations in our community that can accept them. For newspaper, area recycling bins, such as the large green dumpster in the Checkers parking lot, are convenient and free to use. Please take pet food to Just Food Warehouse, 1200 E. 11th. Food must be in original packaging and tightly sealed. Thanks!
