Lawrence Humane Society Update:
April 24, 2011

We're Searching for the Easter Bunny ...

Henry the dog (photo)

LHS: "You look suspicious to us, Henry.
Have you seen the Easter Bunny?
"
Henry: "With these ears, I can understand the confusion. But I'm sorry to say, no, I haven't seen the Easter Bunny (promise). I do know a young lad with a kind and loving personality in need of a home. He's been looking for a forever home since last summer. His breed, a border collie mix, is known for being intelligent, athletic, and eager to learn. Needing daily exercise to live a happy life, a jogger our outdoors type would be perfect. If you want an active, eager-to-please companion, this boy is for you.

"Okay, so since you humans couldn't figure out who this is, I'll give you this hint: he tolerates people strapping fake bunny ears to his head for promotions, and he's a ham for the camera."

Cloud the rabbit (photo)

LHS: "Cloud! Now you DO seem to be hiding something. You haven't been, say, spending the weekend hiding eggs for kids, huh?"
Cloud: "Good point, LHS. I get that a lot around here. But I'm afraid I can’t bring eggs or candy. However, I can deliver a soft touch and a quiet companion. You may not realize rabbits make excellent family pets: we can be easily litter-trained, we enjoy living indoors, and we don't need tons of space. I’m a very sweet young boy and soft as my name suggests … but sadly I’ve now been at the shelter for nearly a year. Can you take a look at me, please? If it helps, I'll even let you call me your special "Easter Bunny" :-). " See Cloud's Profile

So the search continues ... we'll let you know if THE Easter Bunny shows up. In the meantime, like Easter eggs and candy, you can search for interesting and sweet treasures such as Henry and Cloud for your basket at our animal shelter. Reminder: the shelter is closed to the public today and is always closed to viewing animals on Monday.

"Kit-teen" Adoption Special this Month

We have many kittens who arrived at the shelter as babies and months later are still waiting for their forever homes. Now 5 to 12 months old, they're oh-so cute and playful. But sadly, these sweet little dears have been in their kennels their entire lives. Can you help them enjoy a bigger world where they can run and play and receive the love and affection they deserve?

Affectionately known as "kit-teens," we must find these teenage kitties homes! Thus, our $20 adoption promotion for the month of April for any kitten 5 to 12 months of age. Considering this includes the spay/neuter fee, it's an incredible discount to our usual adoption fee.

You can help make a "kit-teen" dream come true by giving a home to one or more of these fantastic felines. See the wonderful "kit-teens" (and other charming felines) available at the shelter or come by for a visit and meet them in person!

Keep your pet safe:
Common Easter traditions can be dangerous for your pets

  • Pets nibble on goodies in the Easter basket. But plastic grass, toys, and foil candy wrappers can turn into an emergency if ingested. Don't be tempted to decorate your pets by tying ribbons or bows around their necks; they don't enjoy it and it may result in choking or strangulation. If you suspect that your pet has ingested something that may not pass through his or her intestinal tract, contact your veterinarian. Waiting until your pet shows signs of distress can make treatment more difficult for them, and more costly for you.
  • Chocolate is high in fat content and contains caffeine and theobromine, which stimulate the nervous system and can be toxic to both dogs and cats. The type and amount of chocolate ingested can affect pets in different ways, so if you call your vet please try to note these details.
  • Easter lilies (and others such as the day lily and the tiger lily) have beautiful flowers, but their leaves contain toxins that can cause severe kidney damage in cats. Eating just one leaf of this toxic plant can result in severe poisoning and within a short time the cat will exhibit signs of toxicity. As the toxins begin to affect the kidneys, kidney failure may result in a tragic loss of life. Please share this with all of your pet loving friends, dog or cat, and help keep pets safe during the holiday.
  • Most important is that buying your child a bunny or chick for Easter is NOT a good idea. Animals should not be presented as gifts -- many end up being neglected, discarded, or brought to the Humane Society. Unfortunately our shelter staff are faced with these situations every year after Easter, and you can help us prevent it.

Shelter Needs
wish list document (image)Original (blue) Dawn dish detergent.
We will be needing LOTS of Original Dawn dish detergent. It's one of the most effective disinfectants for our facility, including the kennels. It's safe and non-toxic to animals and contains no added bleach. Why blue? This helps shelter staff distinguish between soap and bleach "foamers" used in other situations. The Dawn brand seems more effective than other brands, although we are not certain, this may be due to the unique composition of the Dawn liquid.

See our complete wish list for other ways you can help the shelter animals.

Have a great week!
