Lawrence Humane Society Update: August 2, 2011

A Dog is Locked Inside a Hot Car! What Should You Do?

Many pet parents wrongly assume that cracking a window is enough to keep their dogs cool in the car while they make a quick pit stop. "Automobile temperatures can very quickly rise to dangerous levels, and the majority of this increase occurs in the first 15 to 30 minutes," says Dr. Louise Murray, Vice President of ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. When it's 80 degrees outside, your car will be a staggering 114 degrees after just 30 minutes! Worse still, dogs can't cool themselves down as easily as people, and once overheated, they can suffer extensive organ damage or die. If you see a dog in a car, you can help by taking these simple steps.

Updates from the Shelter

It's Whisker Mania this month at the Lawrence Humane Society!
In honor of our feline friends, the Lawrence Humane Society is waiving kitten and cat adoption fees for August. Dozens of adorable kittens and cats are waiting for new homes, including many 2-to-3-month-old kittens of all colors and personalities. Our fabulous felines have received vaccines, flea treatment, a microchip, and feline leukemia/FIV testing (6-months of age and older). Your adoption includes pre- or post-adoption spay or neuter surgery.

$100 refundable deposit required on unaltered animals; adoption requirements apply, travel carrier and collar required or can be purchased at the animal shelter.

Our Adoption Center is open at the following times:
Tuesday-Friday: 11:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Saturdays: 11:30 a.m. – 5:00p.m.
Sundays Noon: – 4:00 p.m.
e-mail us or call             785-843-6835

And don't forget the dogs! We have about 20 adorable small dogs that have arrived recently. Breeds include Pomeranian, Ihasa Apso, Shih Tzu, Small Wirehair Terrier, Dachshund, Schnauzer, Chihuahua, Mini Aussie, Spaniel, and Beagle. And from Boxer to German Shepherd, many large-breed canine companions also await a visit from a special someone with a forever home to share.

Volunteer Programs Update
All LHS volunteer programs are currently on hold while we re-evaluate for the future. Details will be provided via e-mail broadcast and on our Web site when available.

wish list document (image)Stuff We Need
The shelter is very low on paper towels! And here are some other items we can use, if you're out at the store and want to grab extra for us: laundry detergent, cat litter, and blue Dawn dish detergent. See our complete wish list for other ways you can help the shelter animals.

In-Kind Donation Update:
The shelter cannot accept newspaper or pet food donations due to storage and handling limitations. However, there are other organizations in our community that can accept them. For newspaper, area recycling bins, such as the large green dumpster in the Checkers parking lot, are convenient and free to use. Please take pet food to Just Food Warehouse, 1200 E. 11th. Food must be in original packaging and tightly sealed. Thanks!

Help Us Find a Home For ...

Hudson the dog (photo)Hudson – I’m the ultimate exercise machine! In fact, I need someone committed to running with me regularly. Moreover, I’m a gorgeous boy: an American Staffordshire Terrier, 3 years old, and I’ve got a rich coat of brindle brown and bright white markings. I’m very energetic outdoors, but inside I’m a true gentleman, stately and steady. I’d prefer to be the only dog in the home — guess I want you all to myself. Check out my profile

Malaysia the cat (photo)

Malaysia – I’m a beautiful girl with my sassy black stripes and gorgeous green eyes. And I’ve got a cute white muzzle and whiskers. Because I’m so soft, you’ll want to pet me forever … which I’ll love along with a good chin scratch. I’m 2 to 3 years old and was lost from my former home. So I’m really lonesome for someone to love. If you’re looking for someone to love, we’ll be a purr-fect pair! See my profile
