Several breeds of dogs are commonly referred to as pit bull types or "bully breeds." Primarily, these are the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Miniature Bull Terrier, and the American Bulldog. Common stereotypes have been unfair to them, as they are highly intelligent, extremely loyal, and form close bonds with humans. With proper socialization, bully breeds get along very well with other dogs, cats, and children in home environments. Their handsome, soft, short coat is not prone to shedding. They also make excellent jogging partners!

Adopt a bully breed dog this month, and the Lawrence Humane Society will waive all adoption fees for these wonderful pets. Every adoption includes spay/neuter, microchip, collar, leash, tag, vaccinations, 30 days of Shelter Care pet insurance and a complimentary veterinary visit. Although the adoption fee is waived, adoption requirements must be met. All bully breed pets at the Lawrence Humane Society have received a full evaluation from a trained professional to ensure safety with people and other pets when they go home.

Fabulous Felines Downtown for the Holidays!Nicholas the cat (photo)

Adoptable cats and kittens from the Lawrence Humane Society will be featured in the front window at Doodlebugs, 816 Mass. St., during the holiday shopping season, so come by for a visit! Home to a nice selection of gently used and handmade items for children – including clothing, shoes and toys – Doodlebugs will have these playful, adorable felines through Friday, December 23. In addition to finding homes for the sweet pets, the effort hopes to increase awareness for homeless animals and raise money for the care of the pets at the shelter.

Vote to help the animals win $1,000!
This holiday season, Callahan Creek is donating $1,000 to a worthy cause. The Lawrence Humane Society is one of three finalists, but choosing the winner depends upon a fun voting contest on Facebook. We're currently in second place!

Want to help us win? Here's what you can do:

  1. Vote for Lawrence Humane Society and vote often (there is no limit)
  2. Forward this email to co-workers, friends and family
  3. Share on Facebook and Twitter after voting to encourage others to vote
  4. Vote now (graphic)

Callahan Creek is a marketing agency in Lawrence, Kansas, and long-time supporter of the Lawrence Humane Society. The winner will be announced on January 3, 2012.

Updates from the Shelter

Note for December 18: The Lawrence Humane Society's animal shelter will be closed today for the annual staff holiday party. Should an animal emergency arise, please call Lawrence police dispatch at 785-832-7650 or dial 911. You may also reach us anytime by e-mail atin...@lawrencehumane.org.

Santa Paws: The pets had a wonderful time with St. Nick earlier this month, and he left town with plenty of gift ideas for the good little animals. If you ordered Santa Paws photos, you should have received them by e-mail already. If not, please e-mail us.

Questions? Ideas? Drop in for a visit with Dori
Every Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m., the executive director's office is open to the public, without appointment. People are welcome to stop by to visit with Dori Villalon, executive director, with questions, suggestions, or to simply chat about what's happening at the Lawrence Humane Society.

Looking for a job?
The Lawrence Humane Society is a challenging and rewarding place to work if you like to be around animals. Open positions include animal care associates, finance manager, and veterinary care supervisor. To apply or find out more, please check out the jobs area of our Web site.

Volunteering
The Lawrence Humane Society is looking for volunteers to become Dog Play Group Monitors. Staff corral a small group of dogs to go outside and play together, but volunteer monitors are needed to ensure all the pooches stay safe. These positions require multiple training sessions, including volunteer orientation, to become eligible. For more information about this or other volunteer opportunities, please contact Maggie at 785-843-6835 or volu...@lawrencehumane.org.
