Gardner and his trademark bullhorn will get the event underway, starting with a memorial lap around Watson Park in honor of pets no longer with us. Please consider joining us to walk in honor of your pet(s) and bring a photo for all to see, too.

Other Events and Promotions to Benefit the Shelter
The first week of May is Be Kind to Animals Week. And since you support the shelter animals, we know you may not need that reminder. But plenty of people in our community do. Please endeavor to help teach responsible pet care and serve as an example to others. Animals need us to help look out for them, so speak up to make sure people will "be kind to animals." It's a simple message with enormous impact.

Free Food Fashion and Compassion Event (graphic)Thursday, May 5, 2011:
Free food, fashion, and compassion!

Hosted by the KU group Compassion for All Animals, this event will bring together animal lovers interested in becoming involved in animal rights issues. The Lawrence Humane Society's Kayse Aschenbrenner will join speakers from other organizations in presenting information about supporting animal causes. The event includes a special dinner and cruelty-free fashion show. More info

Other Event Updates
If you have one of our wall calendars, you've probably noticed the annual Gigantic Garage Sale for the Shelter was tentatively scheduled for the last weekend of May. Unfortunately, a conflict came up this spring that made those dates no longer available to us. Currently a new date has not been determined, but when information is available we'll be sure to distribute it ASAP.

Have items to donate for the sale? Please hold on to your items for just a bit yet, thanks!

One obstacle we're facing is finding a location suitable to hold our sale this year. We don't simply need a place just for the day of the sale, but really for about a whole month so we can store donated items as they arrive. Know someone who can help with a location? Send us an e-mail.

John Barleycorn the cat (photo)arrow left (graphic)  John Barleycorn
When they say, "You're gonna love this one," I know they mean me! I am such the social boy. I have an ordinary yellow coat, but oh, my personality is anything but. Yes, it's something special, just like my little geranium-pink nose, which everyone here loves. You just have to meet me. I'm about 2 years old, love to play, and am so ready to snuggle into a comfortable spot on a loving lap. Check out my profile

Puckers the dog (photo)Puckers arrow right (graphic)
With a sweet face to go along with this name, you know what's a-comin' … better pucker up for a kiss! I'm about a year old with a sleek black coat, and my white chest uniquely flecked with black makes for one striking Lab mix, I must say. I really enjoy people and I'm looking for someone with an active lifestyle. With a little training, I could be a great jogging partner. And, regardless, I KNOW I'll be a great companion.

We are happy to report both found loving forever homes last week – HOORAY!

April Showers? Not at our shelter. Take a look at all the wonderful animals that found a forever home in April – 69 dogs and 54 cats to be exact. Staff have been posting raindrops and umbrellas on the window behind the front desk to celebrate each pet adoption. Awesome work, shelter staff!

Shelter Needs
wish list document (image)Original (blue) Dawn dish detergent.
We need LOTS of original Dawn dish detergent. It's one of the most effective disinfectants for our facility, including the kennels. It's safe and non-toxic to animals and contains no added bleach. Why
blue? This helps shelter staff distinguish between soap and our bleach "foamers" used in other situations. Why Dawn? We're not sure why, but the Dawn liquid seems more effective than other brands.

See our complete wish list for other ways you can help the shelter animals.

Have a great weekend!
