Lawrence Humane Society Update:
October 6, 2011
The 2011 Pawsible Dream Benefit Auction was a wildly successful night for the homeless animals of our community. With beads, masks and Cajun fare, the atmosphere was festive and lively – a night that would make Bourbon Street proud. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, from bidders to donors and volunteers, thousands of dollars were raised for the Lawrence Humane Society. Thank you!
October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month
Each year, this month gives us an opportunity to bring renewed awareness to the many lovable, sweet dogs currently in the care of an animal shelter or rescue group.
A dog makes a great choice for a pet for so many reasons. They can keep up on the jogging trail and provide security at the same time. From fun like fetch and agility competition to essential animal-assisted therapy for combat veterans, dogs love to please people and have a positive impact on our lives. Best of all, no matter how bad your day has been, your dog will be there to greet you with a smile. He or she will be your devoted, reliable companion for life.
Please consider opening a spot in your family for one of these wonderful dogs at our shelter. They wait and hope someone will provide them with a forever home soon.
All gifts to the Lawrence Humane Society are greatly appreciated and help us provide outstanding care and sheltering for the animals.
Not interested in adopting a dog? You can still help make a difference by making a donation in honor of Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month. Any amount will help. Just $9 allows us to deliver critical vaccines to one dog; for $12, we can treat a dog for deadly parasites and get 'em healthy again.
Coming Up
Thursday, October 6, 6:30: Lawrence Zombie Walk
Tonight zombies will gather in creepy undead attire at the South Park gazebo for the fifth year in a row. It's free to join the fun, and this year all proceeds benefit the Lawrence Humane Society. The zombies walk the length of Mass. Street, past curious (maybe apprehensive) onlookers, while seeking support for our cause. Last year 377 participants joined in the fun. Official Zombie Walk t-shirts will be sold for a minimum donation of just $10. More info
Sunday, October 9, 2011, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dogtoberfest!
Dogtoberfest 2011 is a free, public event to be held this Sunday at South Park in honor of the Lawrence community and our canine companions.
Benefiting the homeless in the community, both people and pets, proceeds from the event will help the Lawrence Humane Society and the Lawrence Community Shelter's Good Dog! Biscuits and Treats "back to work program," employing individuals experiencing or at the risk of homelessness. More info
Updates from the Shelter
Last month we had a tremendous number of people provide foster homes while shelter repairs were taking place. Not only did every dog that needed a temporary home find one, but 10 of them never came back because they were adopted by their foster families! Whoo-hoo! See a video of the sweet dog Helen in this story about the foster program from 6 News Lawrence.

Above: Staff provided photos from the front desk area, showing all the animals adopted during September ... one for each "K" and "U" posted on the wall. Last month 86 dogs, 78 cats, 2 rats, and 2 rabbits found forever homes!

Local Partnership Helps
With Food Donations
Due to storage limitations, the Lawrence Humane Society cannot accept donations of pet food, and we cannot provide pet food to members of our community seeking assistance. But our partnership with Just Food Warehouse allows more people to find help for their pets in need!
If you have pet food to donate, please see the box at right for what Just Food can take in. Not sure how to get there? Just drive north on Haskell Ave., until it ends at 11th Street. Proceed around the corner to the right. Here's a map to help you.
YOU = Most Awesome-est!
Your response to our call for flat-panel monitors last month was nothing short of amazing. Now that each of our workstations is complete, we are pushing forward on the final stage of our major technology upgrade this fall. And, already the signs are showing: last week a fully operational computer workstation was available to staff in the admissions building for the first time – EVER!
Staff have begun training on the use of our new professional shelter management software. When ready, our animal admissions, medical care, cruelty reports, adoption records, and data reporting will be managed electronically. Moving our data away from paper will reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve the lives of pets in our care. We could not do this without your generosity.
See these lovable animals in action!
We've posted a new video of adoptable animals and please share the link with friends and family so more people can see these great animals. You can also find us on Sunflower Channel 6's On Demand service. Get automatic updates when we post new videos by subscribing to

With one look into my soft Beagle eyes, you'll fall fast in love with Speedy. At about 8 years of age, I'm a sweet senior boy with exceptional energy, and, I might mention, lots of loving years ahead of me. Who needs those silly pups anyway when you can have a mature gentleman like me! I'm super friendly, and when it comes to finding my way into your heart, there's nothing slow about Speedy!
On my profile page, you can see more photos and a video of me in action!.
Every pet adopted from the Lawrence Humane Society has had vaccinations, a pre-adoption health examination, heartworm test, and microchip. Browse the many other great cats and dogs available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society.
Have a most excellent weekend!
