Greetings, Growers!
Warning: this is going to be a long one, but it is worth reading because I sure have some great news AND a workday this weekend to announce!
We are very excited to finally announce a new site for the KU Student Farm, the Lawrence Community Garden Project (LCGP) at 9th and Mississippi! As our North site is over five miles away from the KU campus, transportation issues have been the most common constraint in recruiting and sustaining student involvement. We have been working for years to find a more accessible spot in town, either on or off campus, to connect students to a place to grow food, and our prayers have finally been answered!
This year, we are beginning a partnership with the oldest community garden in Lawrence, the Lawrence Community Garden Project, located at 921 Mississippi (just south of the Cork & Barrel). I, Becky Crook, am the manager of this site, and am very excited to begin growing with this cooperative partnership. We are not taking over the site, as a dedicated community of gardeners is already there, but rather, we are taking on the management/coordination responsibilities for the site. We will be gardening side-by-side with some of the current community gardeners, as well as allocating currently underutilized portions of the space for a KU Student Farm community garden.
This is a very exciting opportunity to join forces with the LCGP and spread our roots in the Lawrence community, but we need your help! It is urgent that we revitalize this garden by making some necessary improvements, because if we do not act to preserve this community garden, we may lose it. The City of Lawrence has written many letters to the owner of the land regarding the current state of the property. The owner has been charitable in leasing this land for free for over 22 years and understandably does not want to continually receive letters from the city. He has been very clear that if the land isn’t being managed properly, it will become a space for new duplexes. After speaking with him recently, he is very willing to work with us provided we clean up the site and continue to maintain it properly. We would love to honor his kind contributions by cleaning up the space and adding to the aesthetics of the neighborhood and the community at large.
So, before we can allocate our time and energy into gardening, we need to get this space cleaned up!
This Sunday, March 30, we are having our first ever workday at the Lawrence Community Garden Project! The workday will be from 12-5, although you’re more than welcome to come at any time and stay as long as you would like. We know that it is very short notice, but to sweeten the pot, we are having a raffle! Here is the deal, we will have some $10 Free State Brewery gift cards, and you will get one raffle ticket for every hour of volunteer love you share with us! If you need to leave early, no worries, we will let you know at the end of the day if you won!
If you don’t know a single thing about plants or gardening, don’t worry; we have such a fun and diverse array of tasks, we will need everyone with their unique skills and talents to accomplish it all!
Come lend a hand in:
Cleaning up trash and debris in and around the garden
Fence repair (digging holes, pouring quikrete, painting, sawing, you name it)
Spreading mulch and/or compost
Pulling out dead plants
Cleaning out the shed
Maybe even some tilling if things get crazy!
If you have them, please bring work gloves (and if you have another pair that you could bring to lend, that would be great). Also, if you have any useful tools to bring, it sure would help a lot! There are never too many shovels, hoes, pitchforks, or wheel barrels, in my opinion. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Please feel free to bring your friends, bring your family, bring some snacks or beverages, and help us celebrate this wonderful opportunity with some work, fun, and community building! Who knows, you may even find your undiscovered and soon undying passion for fence repair!
