autoplay and autorun are closely related; autoplay "[...] automatically launches applications to play or display [...]" media files (e.g. videos, music or pictures). Which means that a specially crafted media file can exploit your media viewer and compromise your system.
Hello all, i'm banging my head against the wall here. I can't seem to get Autoplay to disable via any method I try other than manually turning it off. I have tried every registry key I can find but when I check it, it's always still turned on. Group policy settings don't work either. I have to be missing something simple here but can't seem to see it.
I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\ and it has the same key I set in HKCU where the NoDriveTypeAutoRun value is already set to ff. So it must have passed that over from the HKCU settings. But, it's still turned on either way.
However, if you prefer your PC to take no action after connecting a USB drive, you can safely disable AutoPlay in the Settings. Here we show the three ways to turn off AutoPlay in Windows 11 and 10 computers.

Hi all. I have created a settings catalog policy to turn off autoplay on all drives. I confirmed that the policy applied successfully on my Azure AD device. However, Autoplay is still enabled. I also tried using an Admin Template instead, but no luck. Is this a bug? Am I missing something?

I built an app that we use for some digital signage at my company, and I've run into a problem with Chrome - it doesn't want to autoplay the video when a new screen is launched. This feature works fine in IE, Edge, and Firefox, but I have to actually click the video to get it to start playing when in Chrome. I've made sure that autoplay is enabled on the video itself inside the PowerApp.
In Edge I have enabled the autoplay setting both globally and for powerapps.com. Could not find the Chrome autoplay flag.
Is this a YouTube problem or a browser problem or a Power Apps problem?
Ran into a similar problem as I use a mp4 file for my app splash screen. Google moved, rather removed the autoplay option. But it's still there and here is how you change the setting so that your vid file plays. This is for the latest version of Chrome at the time of writing , ie Version 112.0.5615.138 (Official Build) (64-bit).
You're very welcome @Willson . Alternatively, I ended up making a few seconds clip from the original mp4 and turning that into an animated GIF. That way it would look like a vid playing, but without the hassle of instructing each and every non-tech savvy user (I have a large user base) on how to find the Settings option for whatever browser they might be using.
Does anybody know how to disable autoplay of songs, I want to start it and once it is finished it should not go to the next song. In earlier versions there used to be checkboxes next to the songs that yo could uncheck to disable autoplay in the playlist.

i copied those 3 line above and pasted on a text document and saved it as autorunoff.reg as told bu you.
after that i run that file and changes in the registry were made(windows confirmed it by a prompt).
but then i inserted my pendrive and autoplay menu was there for me.
i use WINDOWS XP SP2.
So please help me out.

Some devices will open Device Stage instead of AutoPlay when you connect the device to your computer and turn on the device. To import pictures or videos from these devices, click the Import link in Device Stage.
Firefox blocks all media with sound from playing automatically, by default. If you want a website to automatically play media or make other changes to your autoplay settings, you can use one of the methods below.

Viruses are easily spread through the USB flashdrives. Viruses transmitted this way are created in a way that they are automatically ran (autmatically activated) when plugged into a running computer or when the Drive is opened (clicking or double clicking), and let's face it, not all malwares can be detected by your anti virus at once. One way to minimize this is to turn off the autoplay feature of your drives.
This gives you time to clean your USB flash drive. You can right click it and choose scan for viruses using your anti virus software, or right clicking then choosing explore

To disable your drives, you need to open the group policy editor. To do this you can click the start button then run and type gpedit.msc or hit the windows key then r and type gpedit.msc
again, there are two ways to open the group policy editor
1. start button > run > gpedit.msc > ok
2. windows key + r > gpedit.msc > ok
on the right pane, under computer configurtion, double click on administrative template
again,
1. start button > run > gpedit.msc > ok > computer configuration > administrative templates
2. windows key + r > gpedit.msc > ok > computer configuration > administrative templates
Still on the right pane, double click system
again,
1. start button > run > gpedit.msc > ok > computer configuration > administrative templates > System
2. windows key + r > gpedit.msc > ok > computer configuration > administrative templates > system
Scroll down and locate "Turn off Autoplay. Once found, double click it.
again,
1. start button > run > gpedit.msc > ok > computer configuration > administrative templates > system > turn off autoplay
2. windows key + r > gpedit.msc > ok > computer configuration > administrative templates > system > turn off autoplay
After doublNow that you have opened the Turn off Autoplay interface, you will find out that the default setting is Not configured. So lets configure it.
Click on the "Enabled" radio button. Clicking this will enable turn off autoplay, or in simpler terms, autoplay is turned off. :)
on the "Turn off Autoplay on" pull-down menu, choose all drives and click on ok.

gpedit. msc is not xp home, i think it's because they dont expect the users to be tweaking their OS, anyway, here is a method for XP Home users:

This feature is incorporated in Windows 10 to automatically start specific programs, open removable drives, or play media files automatically when CDs, DVDs, or media cards are inserted. AutoRun has a sub-feature., i.e. AutoPlay, which allows programs to play or run as soon as the media devices get attached to the computer (this feature is turned on by default in Windows 10).
Windows 10 systems enabled with AutoPlay or AutoRun feature are vulnerable to malware attacks that cause data losses and corruption if a USB drive containing a malicious program is inserted into your computer (even if it is locked). So, always turn off the default Windows AutoPlay settings to keep your computer and crucial data safe and secure.
The initial sequence is handled much the same in every version of Windows from Windows 95. However, the way the autorun.inf file is read and acted upon and the level of integration of AutoRun with AutoPlay has changed significantly from the time AutoPlay was introduced in Windows XP until the present handling in Windows 7. In Windows 10, Microsoft has added the option to enable autorun in its settings. Not only users can turn it on but also they can choose specific external devices for autoplay.

You could of course argue that one can turn off audio from Anki in the volume mixer (on Windows-based OSes, at least), and I have actually done this from time to time, but it means one has to go into the volume mixer and mute/unmute Anki every time you want to engage in TL content or rep cards in Anki. This is a obviously a bigger inconvenience than just pressing an additional button (see previous paragraph).
