URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT
Tell Your US Senators to Support the Second Amendment and Oppose Feinstein
Anti-gun extremist Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) is trying today and
probably tomorrow to strip pro-Second Amendment U.S. Senator Richard
Shelby's (R-Ala.) language prohibiting purchase preferences from the
Senate's Treasury/Postal Appropriations legislation (for details on the
Shelby language, see below). It is critical that all pro-Second Amendment
activists contact their U.S. Senators and urge them to support Senator
Shelby's purchase preference prohibition language, and oppose Senator
Feinstein's motion to strike the Shelby language from the Treasury/Postal
Appropriations legislation. You can contact your Senators by calling (202)
224-3121, or by using the "Write Your Reps" feature on NRAILA.org.
DETAILS ON SENATOR SHELBY'S PURCHASE PREFERENCE PROHIBITION LANGUAGE
Last week, U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) was able to attach language
to the 2001 Treasury, Postal Service and General Government Appropriations
bill that will help to derail the anti-gun agenda being promoted by HUD
Secretary Andrew Cuomo. Shelby's language would prohibit the Treasury
Department, Postal Service, and other agencies from granting or
withholding firearms contracts on the basis of gun makers' agreement to
arbitrary "codes of conduct" relating to their operating or design
practices in importing, manufacturing, or dealing in firearms or
ammunition -- such as the coerced agreement signed recently by Smith &
Wesson (S&W). Sen. Shelby, along with Sens. Ben Nighthorse Campbell
(R-Colo.), and Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) deserve credit for thwarting an earlier
attempt in committee by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) to strip the language
that would prohibit establishing politically-motivated purchase
preferences for government firearms contracts. The Senate language does
not refer specifically to the Smith & Wesson Sellout, but it was clearly
inspired by the concern that the Clinton-Gore Administration would fulfill
its threat to impose purchase preferences on the Department of Treasury,
Postal Service, and all other agencies covered by this bill's
jurisdiction. HUD Secretary Cuomo has already proposed such purchase
preferences for federal law enforcement agencies, and his proposal would
encourage or require the federal government to give highly preferential
procurement treatment to firearms manufacturers, like S&W, who sign
coerced agreements restricting their otherwise legitimate activities.

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...
disarm only those who are neither inclined
nor determined to commit crimes...
Such laws make things worse for the
assaulted and better for the assailants;
they serve rather to encourage than to
prevent homicides, for an unarmed man
may be attacked with greater confidence
than an armed man.
