FIRST « Spring Social Conference » : March 2011

Preparatory Conference : 28 September 2010

THON Hotel, Brussels

After the European Social Forum in Malmö, some twenty European Trade Unions and social movements decided, in consultation with the ETUC, to start a joint discussion process. In the medium term, the aim of this process was to be able to gather each year -just before the Spring Summit where the EU leaders announce their social and economic priorities- a large platform of European and national trade unions and anti-globalisation movements so that, on the basis of a common thorough work, we can express our own agenda, policy priorities and mobilization prospects.

Our approach is to convene the first « Social Spring Conference » in Brussels (International Trade Union House) on Thursday 10 March and Friday 11 March 2011.

The organizations that have taken the initiative for this process are pleased to invite you to a Preparatory Conference where we would like to produce the working papers that would be discussed by March 2011. This preparatory meeting shall take place on:

Thursday 28 September 2010

From 10AM to 5PM

in Brussels, THON Hotel, avenue du Boulevard, 17

(Close to the ETUC)

(Remark: The meeting takes place the day before the Eurodemonstration of 29 September in Brussels).

Please find in the attached document the detailed timetable of this preparatory meeting. It shall be divided into two parts:

- Working about the account of the crisis and the analysis that we make about the crisis (starting from the subprimes in 2008 to the attacks against Greece in 2010) and also on the limits or weak points of the social movements’ responses.

- Working in groups on the priority topics that we would like to present to the March 2011 Conference:

Monetary policy and European Central Bank

Public budgets, fiscal matters, debt

Wages and competitiveness

Pension and social security systems

(possibly : EU Foreign trade)

Translation will be provided in English and French. It is possible to get passive translations in other languages as well.

The participation in the Preparatory Conference is free of charge. However the participants are requested to bear the expenses of their travel costs and accommodation.

We can take care of booking a room for the participants at the hotel at their request. However, a solidarity-based funding (maximum 200 euros) can be provided for the colleagues coming from Eastern and Central Europe. Participants may also stay with friends and colleagues in Brussels.

Lunch will be provided at the venue of the meeting. The registration is indispensable (please fill in the attached form).

We would like to stress that the rationale behind the whole process of the Joint Social Conference is that people who get registered should be able to duly represent their organization at that Conference. We would also underline that the organizations should take into consideration the need for dedicating some time at the internal level, from the end of September till March 2011, in order to study the preparatory documents.

Thank you for your attention

Avrebbe dovuto partecipare sabina petrucci che nella fiom segue le
questioni europee. Ma quel giorno a Bruxelles per due riunioni FEM. Io
sono a Torino per altra iniziativa. Cari saluti e buona riunione.
