When I conducted mixed-effects model, I found X--> Y, X --> M, M --> Y all significant. But when I conducted multilevel mediation analysis with lavaan, the indirect effect was significant but the total effect was not. How should I interpret this?

Thank you so much for any help!!

Hi Haimei,

Do you mean the path X-->Y was not significant, but the indirect effect was? I usually understand it as we test the relationship between X and Y through M, so when controlling M, X-->Y may be insignificant.
When I conducted mediation analysis, I also conducted bootstrapping and reported the confidence interval, which could help to explain the significance of mediation effects.
Hope this helped!

Best,
Yubo
