With the advent of lecture capture platforms, recording lectures has made it beneficial for both instructors and students to access and digest learning material. Whether you are looking to record in a small classroom, a large auditorium, or outside of the classroom, lecture capture solutions has enabled instructors to record course-related videos just about anywhere.
Regardless of where your lecture capture takes place, the main components an instructor needs to record online course materials involves a lecture capture software, built-in webcam and microphone, or a mobile device.
If you do not have it installed already, the existence of lecture capture software is the first step you will need in order to begin recording. Whether you are recording on a mobile device, tablet, or on a Mac/PC, be sure to download the necessary applications to officially get started.
Your recording location is crucial in determining the level of additional capture equipment you may need in order to maximize the quality of your lecture recordings. Here are some key factors that may affect the quality of your recordings:
If students are having trouble hearing your audio, additional microphones can help enhance audio quality.
Audio quality is essential for capture functionality; users need to be able to hear what you are saying. Poor audio quality makes captures less useful, and may leave users feeling discouraged and frustrated. There are...
We are all aware of this change; in fact, lecture capture solutions are already quite a mainstay in many learning institutions. In a survey conducted by Peter Reed, over 92% of students utilize lecture capture...

YuJa may run an error in low percentage of cases where the computer services that allow the YuJa Software Center to upload a recording are stopped and require reactivating. The error reads, "The YuJa Software Capture Service does not appear to be running. Without the Service running, your capture will not be uploaded. Please restart the Service through Windows Services or by restarting the computer. If this message persists, please contact sup...@yuja.com." Below is a screen shot of the error being presented.
We have successfully pushed an update for Software Capture for PC binary to all instances residing in the Canada, Australia, and the European Union (the US zone update will happen next Friday). This update provides our users with the new Microsoft Media Foundation engine, improved compatibility for DirectShow capture cards, improved workflow for profile creation, new architecture for Remote Profile Management, horizontal and vertical orientation for cameras, updating the engine for proctoring, the ability to publish recordings into multiple channels, audio gain adjustments, and other optimizations.
We have released a new Software Capture for PC version (9.1.0) that introduces the SmartUpload algorithm for recording uploads, improved error alerts for remotely scheduled captures and 15+ smaller improvements and fixes. Please note that this release has been pushed out to all instances within the United States, Canada and European Union zone.
YuJa is configured by default to use the correct settings for audio, video, and screen capture in all NDSU instrumented classrooms. In some cases, the settings may get corrupted or an error may cause the software to switch the audio and video defaults to incorrect settings. In those cases, users should manually reset the settings to the correct options by following the instructions below.
We have recently seen an increase in validation errors when trying to start Yuja and initiate a recording. The error will appear on the screen as YuJa is started and indicates that the shared profile that is configured on all classroom computers for YuJa cannot be accessed. If you experience this error, please follow the steps on this page to configure your audio and video settings manually and make sure to test your audio using the room microphone and the audio meter in the YuJa recording window. If you see the volume meter indicator move as you speak into the microphone, your recording should have the audio captured correctly.
The video setting should be set as seen in the images below. The content capture (computer screen, document camera image, laptop image, or AirMedia content) is selected as the first video source with a name in the format of DVI2PCI D2Pxxx (VGA) or DVI2PCI Duo D2Pxxx (VGA). Video Source 2 is the video camera in the room and should be called Camera and Mic or just Camera.
OIT Classroom Technology Support can schedule automated recordings to capture the screen and audio (provided the instructor uses one of the provided microphones in the classroom) at instructor request for classes scheduled in the following classrooms:
Please note that only ALP 1300 and ALP 2300 have installed cameras to capture video of a class session. Instructors can use the lectern control panel under YuJa to adjust the live video camera settings in ALP 1300 and 2300.
Mac users: There is a known, but highly unpredictable issue with Mac devices connected via HDMI that may cause missing video in scheduled recordings. Typically, if your screen is visible via the classroom projection system, then your content should be captured, but there are some exceptions. In SSLH 100, for instance, if your screen is visible via the projector, but does -not- appear on the lectern monitor, then your video may not be captured successfully by the YuJa hardware and this is most likely due to the unpredictable Mac issue.
Fortunately, you can use Zoom as a workaround if you encounter any issues with HDMI connections in general or with your video capture in scheduled recordings while working from a Mac connected via HDMI:
On December 31, 2018, TechSmith discontinued support for their TechSmith Relay (Self-Hosted) lecture capture system. Throughout the deployment of YuJa, our current media management and lecture capture solution, we continued to allow (but strongly discouraged) the use of TechSmith Relay. On December 20, 2019 after 10 years of heavy instructional use, we retired the TechSmith Relay lecture capture service. All published presentations will continue to be accessible without interruption and will NOT be affected.
No download is required to simply view video content on YuJa, but before recording a video with YuJa for the first time, you must download and install the YuJa Software Capture application for Mac/PC. Many features, including recording, are also available on the mobile app for phone/tablet. Using screen capture and/or your webcam and microphone, this application creates a recording which may be shared/viewed via emailed link, on Blackboard, or directly on the UND YuJa site. Please see System Requirements page for more information.
We recommend accessing YuJa directly via the Virtual Campus (Brightspace). Once connected to YuJa through the Virtual Campus, you can download the YuJa client, allowing you to capture your course lectures.
