LSPIRG is seeking applicants for the position of Global Citizenship
Conference (GCC)
Coordinator. The GCC will be a one day conference of workshops,
panels, and a keynote
as well as social and discussion-based opportunities around the topic
of Global Citizenship.
Although past conferences have been 3 days, this year’s conference
will be one day, Saturday,
March 5th.
The Coordinator will be awarded a $250 honourarium upon the completion
of the conference.
The time dedication is expected to be approximately 10 hours a week,

the immediate lead-up to the conference. The position is to start as
soon as possible.
The duties of the coordinator are expected to be as follows:
● Work closely with the other coordinators (eg. the volunteer

coordinator, etc.)
of the conference to ensure tasks are completed on time.
● Organize and chair regular (preferably at least weekly) meetings for
the organizational
team
● Create a comprehensive budget for the conference to present to the
LSPIRG Finance
Committee
● Seek out fundraising opportunities for the conference, possibly from
academic
departments and deans
● Other tasks as they arise
The ideal candidate possesses excellent time management skills, is a
team player, is
passionate about social justice, and has experience working with
student groups on campus.

3) Climate Justice and the Tar Sands -- Speaker Series
You are invited to attend an upcoming event in the 'Environment and
Justice
Speakers Series"; you are welcome to forward this information to
interested
parties.
Wednesday, November 24, Dr. Byron Williston from the WLU Philosophy
Department will present for 'The Environment and Justice Speakers
Series'.
Dr. Williston's presentation, "Climate Justice and the Tar Sands",
will
present a compelling issue for those with an interest in Canada
maintaining
moral leadership on the world stage.
See the abstract below:
Given the reality of anthropogenic climate change, what should Canada
do
with its vast store of bitumen in the Athabasca region of Alberta? I
will
argue that while there are (some) ethically compelling reasons to
exploit
the resource, there are far weightier reasons to refrain from doing
this. In
particular, the arguments put forth in favour of exploitation
systematically
ignore the interests of future generations. From the standpoint of
intergenerational justice, Canada's decision to proceed with the
unrestrained exploitation of this resource constitutes a massive moral
failing on its part.
Please Join us in Bricker Academic 111, 6:30pm on Wednesday November
24, for
"Climate Justice and the Tar Sands".
