This Thanksgiving season, I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of the parents, community members and others who collaborate with our system to provide a world class learning environment. Our students and staff members greatly appreciate your hard work and commitment, which fuel our journey to Vision 2018. I offer my best wishes for a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday, and look forward to our continued collaboration over the coming months and years.

HCPSS Named Among Best School Districts
in the Nation
The Howard County Public School System has been named among the best school districts in the nation, and the top district in the state of Maryland, according to rankings released this week by Niche.com, an education and community analysis firm.

Special Education Community Advisory Committee Forum - PARCC and Accommodations
Mon., Dec. 8, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Homewood Center Cafeteria, 10914 Route 108, Ellicott City
Students in Grades 3-8, Grade 10 English, and Algebra 1 & 2 in Math, will participate in PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) assessments this spring. Learn about accommodations for the PARCC assessments and how they will impact students who have an IEP.

Blue Ocean Student Entrepreneurial Competition
Registration deadline: Jan. 10, 2015
Students from HCPSS high schools are sponsoring a statewide entrepreneurial competition for all high school students. Working alone or in groups of 2-3, participants will create an innovative idea for a product or service and an initial plan for how they would bring it to market. Students will compete for $2,000 in cash prizes.
Registration is free and available through Jan. 10, with a virtual kickoff meeting to be held on Jan. 17. The competition will be held Sat., March 21 at Centennial High School. Project guidelines, judging criteria and more information is available at BlueOceanComp.org.

Maryland Parent Involvement Matters Awards
Nomination deadline: Jan. 30, 2015
Applications are now being accepted for the 2014 Maryland State Department of Education's Parent Involvement Matters Awards (PIMA). The awards recognize parents and guardians who have made significant contributions to schools and school systems in improving education, securing resources, developing programs or influencing educational policy at local and state levels.

Friends of Education Award

This Board of Education award recognizes individuals, businesses, or organizations making innovative or unique contributions that directly support the school system’s mission of excellence in teaching and learning. Any Howard County resident or group, organization, or business located in or serving Howard County may be nominated for the award.
