We won the fight, but the battle is not done.  As you may know, this was only a first step in changes with the DeKalb Schools.  There will be more closures, more redistricting.  They are probably already discussing next steps to this process.  We must stay aware and involved so that we continue to have successes such as this.
I cannot express to you how disheartened I become when I think that I live equal distance from two schools in the same district that could not be further apart on the performance spectrum. Go a few miles further and you will find schools even better and worse.
I saw this from Maureen Downey at the AJC and thought I would share with all of you. It's not only good advice for South DeKalb, but for all of us.

Dear Friends of Laurel Ridge –
Wow…what a month! After the most recent redistricting crisis, we’re all deserving of a fun night at the upcoming Spring Bash 2011. Please join us next Friday, March 18th at 6:00pm for Spring Bash 2011 featuring International Dinner and celebration, followed by our much anticipated second annual Science Night at 6:30.
Of course, this will only be successful with your help. Thank you for asking how you can help! J
1. Tracy Hammer (teacher) chairs the Science Night event and needs 20 volunteers to man the pre-made science tables. Ms. Hammer will provide all the training you will need and you can count on it being an educational and interesting experience for you and your guests. This year’s theme is “Garden Earth Naturalist”. Please contact Ms. Hammer to volunteer at tracy_m...@fc.dekalb.k12.ga.us.
2. Ms. Hammer also seeks other scientists to share their own profession, hobby or interest by hosting a hands on interactive activity. Please see the attached Science Night flyer for more details.
3. Paula Turman (teacher) chairs the International Night portion of our Spring Bash and requests volunteers to request food donations for the festivities. Last year we had a terrific assortment of traditional foods of Italy, Greece, Mexico, India, China, Thailand and, of course America! Please contact your favorite restaurants for donations. Just imagine a cafeteria full of people with no food…that’s motivation! A donation form is attached. Please contact Ms. Turman with your donation progress, or to ask how you can help. Not a parent of a LRES student but are interested in our school? Please join us as a volunteer or just for fun. Like most of our PTA events, we welcome the entire LRES community!
At the risk of repeating, we’re just over a week away and Ms. Hammer and Ms. Turman have been working very hard but need your help! Please let us hear from you. Thank you so very much – LRES ROCKS!
Sincerely,

And how about a community get-together?

Although I offered my house, I now think it will not be big enough.  We could, though, have an afternoon pot-luck in the Old Mill Ct. cul-du-sac where I live.  My neighbors and I have done this before -- the space works pretty well.  Of course, partying outside always brings the uncertainty of the weather into the picture.

What do you all think of the following plan:  an outside pot-luck for Saturday 19 March from 2-6PM with a bad-weather date of Saturday 26 March?  I'm willing to co-ordinate things -- get some tables lined up, paper plates, etc.
The flowers will be out and I hope it's a beautiful Spring day.

If someone has another idea, let's hear it.  I've thought about the church as an inside venue, but don't know anyone there.  What do you all think?  Britt

WAITING FOR SUPERMAN by Davis Guggenheim
In light of our recrnt efforts on behalf of our school, I wanted to pass on some info about a great documentary which deals with the history, systemic nationwide problems, and current reformers of the public school system in the US, all seen through the eyes of  the 5 kids that are featured in the film.
Check it out if you haven't already seen it; I actually bought a copy @ Target for 20 bucks that comes w/ a gift card that you can donate to a teacher at LR- for supplies.
Look forward to Saturday...we will bthere with food.

We're also sorry to have missed the get together. We hope you all enjoy the great weather and company!
