Message from Audrey:
Hi All,
I too have sent a last effort email to all of the Board members requesting that they vote NO on the current plan to allow the Board more time to consider the merits of the community requests and make this a stronger and more effective plan. The residents of DeKalb County deserve this! I reminded them that I had spoken with many of them and knew for a fact that they have some unanswered questions about the reasons for some of the redistricting and that they didn't feel heard either. I told them that they had the power to demand answers for themselves and those they represent!
I added some of my personal commentary as it related to our family as well.
I also wrote a separate email to Donna Elder since she had offered to make a motion tonight in the meeting if no amendment had been made prior to tonight in our community's honor (and perhaps others as well). I reminded her of our conversation and told her that others felt as she did. I asked her to help our community and help the residents of Dekalb county have a voice! We need her now more than ever.
To all of you - James and I have enjoyed having the opportunity to meet many of you over these past few weeks. We have lived on McLendon Drive in the Lindmoor neighborhood for over 7 years and have never felt like a part of the neighborhood and have met very few of our neighbors personally. We were always unsure if others shared our similar values regarding community and have been so happy to see that some of you did! Thank you for making us feel like a part of the community and we hope to see you at the community pot luck if all moves forward. As far as what we have decided to do if the proposal passes tonight - we will be looking to private school which will be a sacrifice for us but the option of McLendon is not one we are at all comfortable with. We believe it will take a long time for the school to make the necessary improvements and do not want to risk the chance on our son's education. We also had planned to put our home on the market this spring anyway, and plan to continue to do so.
Let's all hope a miracle happens tonight! Thank you for your hard work neighbors!
Audrey & James
This is what I have pieced together from the board policies:
The Board, at its discretion, may accept, modify, or reject the recommendation of the Superintendent.
From her 2/7/2011 presentation:
The Board will take action on the Superintendent's recommendation, in full, in part or a total different configuration, a February 28, 2011 called meeting.
I have been reading the minutes for the last few meetings and I have found, they do have the ability to also pull this agenda item for a "Separate" vote. Hopefully someone will motion to make this change based on the above or through a request for a separate vote. They seem to use this action to pull out pieces of the agenda to vote on, rather than just rubber stamp the entire board agenda for the evening.
Is the meeting at 6pm tonight at the same place?
She spoke with a Board Member who said that talking with other Board Members that represent other areas was a "no no". She represents the whole district and doesn’t understand that . Said "maybe this is my being naïve, since I'm new - she doesn’t think the plan will be amended by Tyson, but feels that Don will make a motion. Will be a motion "within a motion". Donna may not vote for that amendment - and feels that there are 5 votes from the other members to get it done (and wouldn’t need her vote). The motion has 7-8 different components to it and that would mean that she would approve of other motions that she may not agree to. She could make a motion for that particular issue (Valley Brook/Lindmoor) but not when they are combined. Forest Hills, Midway, Sagamore, Dunwoody, all have parts to it. She feels that there were 5 board members that got together behind the scenes to package these motions together - lending support to each other's particular concerns so that they can get the whole group passed.
She is hoping that as a board they could get to a place to get the issues on the table and debate them without backroom negotiations like this. That is why she doesn’t think she can vote on it, but she reiterated many times that it should pass.
So...this is good! As long as her assumption is right.
I admit I don’t really understand all the “in’s and out’s” but it sounds like we’ve got some reps who heard and may be willing to take a stand via motion to revise, even if Ms. Tyson doesn’t. Let’s just hope Ms. Edler’s opinions are accurate. Keeping fingers crossed. See you tonight.

Yeah they said with the amendments made last night, it reduced the displaced kids by 25%. :D
Anyone know if a copy of that amendment is online anywhere? I'm guessing we're taking on the Medlock kids... weren't there another 14 from another school that wanted to come to LR too? I wonder if they are coming.

Hello all,
Is anyone in this group interested in talking about how to get the strip mall on the corner of L'Ville Hwy and McLendon repaired, cleaned up, and free of bums? I think you all will agree that it is embarrasing and presents a rather depressing entrance to our community. My wife Audrey and I are fed up and I started doing some research on this. Also filed a code violation complaint with Dekalb this morning and know who this owner is (Abe Podber, of Podber Limited Partnerships - 404-874-4255) This is the same strip mall owner that inspired this AJC article http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/shared-blogs/ajc/badie/entries/2006/02/02/ - so I think that it will take a concerted effort to get them to do anything and thought I'd reach out to the community. Since we all banded together on the redistricting I thought reaching out to the same group made sense, but let me know if I should send to a different group or email address.

Before you guys head over there with pitchforks and torches... consider this. Maybe this guy is a slumlord, but what about his tenants? The fish market? Yeah, it's a dive, but they have great crawfish.. seriously... and the other businesses? These people likely rent from him, because it's the best they can afford. You force this guy to "brighten up" the place, and he's forced to raise his rent. His tenants can't pay, and they go out of business, and next thing you know, you've got more people on the unemployed list. Maybe I just see things from a different perspective, but this is people's livelihood at stake here.

I appreicate everyone's passion around this issue. I would like to see a separate list serv started about the strip mall and keep this one for Laurel Ridge issues.

I think these issues are important and that they do affect property values, etc. I am only suggesting that a different email list be set up which allows people to make a choice regarding involvement with this particular issue. Right now if you don’t want to receive emails about the strip mall you would need to unsubscribe to this list and that doesn’t make sense to me when there are other options.

As another person whose inbox feels a bit overwhelmed, I'll just chime in with a "yes"--we are all trying to get more involved in the community, but there will be issues that come up that don't feel vital to everyone on this list, which is a pretty large one, I believe.
Connecting here offers the opportunity for those who do want focus on more auxiliary issues (and I think the link to LRES enrollment is a tenuous one) to create their own task forces. And I applaud all of you who can put time and energy to productive use on this issue.

Trisha,
Although I realize this is not about redistricting, it does seem to me to have impact on Laurel Ridge. That strip mall impacts our property values and reduces the attractiveness of the neighborhood. This can directly impact enrollment at Laurel Ridge. Doesn't the community that surrounds Laurel Ridge also qualify as a Laurel Ridge issue. I thought we were trying to get more involved in the community?
