Posted January 16, 2023(edited) I have long been confused by the way times of events, chats etc are displayed in Second Life, with particular reference to the Firestorm Viewer, which I have used almost exclusively though I have used Radegast to keep an alt logged in sometimes.

I finally decided to find out how it was all done from an authoritative source, so I looked at _displayed_time_format However, after reading this, while I somewhat understand it, I am rather baffled by why the different ways each point of reference for times of events and chats are so variable, and why there cannot be more uniformity and consistency?

As far as I know, anything that is generated by the servers will be in Second Life's official time; SLT, which is the same as PST or PDT according to the time of year. This will dictate how time is shown in chat, coversations, logs, notices etc, and is not changeable by the user.

I am not even convinced that 1 timezone representation will be the right answer. Some of us would be happy but I suspect that many people will want the time in SLT (as that is how all the events are published (and those are not necessarily timestamps that the viewer can change) but things like chat and TP history might be preferable in user local. I could probably ask 100 people and get at least 6 different common permutations that they'd want.

One of the things I struggle with is clearly conveying to someone how strongly I feel about something. This is sometimes referred to as "Hill Dying Status" (i.e. do I feel so strongly about this that it's a hill I'm willing to die on). By the way, not sure who originally used that phrase but I think it was Brian Halligan or maybe JD Sherman. Doesn't matter.

You've tried meeting someone on your own, or using a dating site. But none of those matches led to anything serious, and all the people you were even remotely interested in turned out to be totally wrong for you.

That doesn't mean I think it's impossible to meet someone great on a dating app. These days, online dating is the most popular way for heterosexual couples in the U.S. to meet, according to a 2019 study by researchers at Stanford University and the University of New Mexico.

I know I'm not alone. Nearly half (45%) of Americans who used dating apps or websites in the previous year said the experience left them feeling more frustrated, according to an October 2019 Pew Research Center survey of 4,860 U.S. adults.

In talking to friends and reading various media about modern dating, I've found that people have all sorts of legitimate gripes: Matches won't respond, texters ghost, people get nude-y photos they didn't ask for.

At 36, I'm trying to be more intentional about how I spend my time. There's evidence this kind of attitude improves wellbeing. And the more intentional I get, the less patience I have for the optional activities that make me pretty miserable, including online dating. They're just not worth it.

Now, instead of swiping and chatting with guys whose vibes I can't gauge and meeting up only to force conversation, I'm catching up with my grandma or reading plays or seeing stand up with friends ("Just For Us" was so good).

Many of these romance scams originate in west Africa, predominantly Nigeria and Ghana. Criminal organizations use legitimate dating apps to defraud people who are looking for love. The scammers strategically target recently widowed or divorced seniors due to their vulnerabilities and access to cash.

Both women and men in Seattle on the site send longer messages than singles in other cities and are more likely to respond to messages, according to Bruch. She says that people in Seattle are putting more effort into courtship. Seattleites on the dating site were also more likely to have children than in any of the other cities.

Another study published last week by researchers at Stanford found that 39% of opposite-sex couples had met online as of 2017, almost doubling from 22% in 2009. By contrast, 65% of same-sex couples met online, with no significant change since 2009, indicating that the queer community turned to online dating faster than straight singles. The study that looked at Seattle in detail focused only on opposite-sex courtship.
