When the narcissistic water god Habaek (Nam Joo-hyuk) visits earth in order to find a stone powerful enough to help him claim his throne, he seeks out the help of his servant and destined bride, psychiatrist So-Ah (Shin Se-kyung), whose family is fated to serve the water god for generations. The problem is that she has no belief in the gods and initially mistakes him for suffering from delusions. Things get even stranger when the wind god Bi-ryeom (Gong Myung), the water goddess Moora (Krystal), and the semi-god Hoo-ye (Lim Ju-hwan) show up to complicate things.
So I've been watching Run on while its been airing and I've absolutely fallen in love with the two main leads LOL. So to fill time while I wait for new episodes I decided to watch other projects that the leads have been in! I was going through Netflix and I saw that Shin Se-kyung was in both Rookie historian and bride of habaek - I'm currently halfway through rookie historian and I think its sooo cute and pretty good so far (consequently I'm now also in love w Cha Eun-woo....)
Nakbin(낙빈):Habaek's first love - she is the very reason why every year, a bride must be sacrificed to Habaek. When she died, Habaek promised that he would return to her, no matter what her form is. She was revealed to be the very first person who Habaek met in the human world and initially thought that she was human. Because of her young age, Habaek promised himself that she is to become his bride and waited for her to come of age. After their marriage, Nakbin would often speak of the spider lily, which represents a hopeful but tragic fate for lovers. Hoo-Ye cared for her as she was his sister, she was very attached to him and despised humans for taking advantage of Hoo-ye. While it is suggested that she willingly agreed to marry Habaek as part of Emperor's plans in exchange for saving Hoo-ye from death, her love for Habaek appeared to be genuine, in spite of her stating otherwise. Tired of being a used for all sorts of things and unwilling to kill Habaek, Nakbin cursed him so that his power would diminish during the day so he won't be used against the fire gods, though Habaek commented that she could have just ordered him to die. Nakbin apparently died long ago, though those bearing her appearance continue to appear before Habaek through the emperor's machinations. Nakbin later appears at the Emperor's palace, alive only due to the Emperor's magic; her body cannot be sustained outside the Imperial Country. While the Emperor's supposition that Habaek's great love for Nakbin will force him to remain in the Imperial Country proved to be absolute, Nakbin chose to let go of Habaek first when he revealed to her that she was not his only bride and that another woman was actually his soul mate, though Habaek would not send Nakbin away. In response, Nakbin angrily refused to release Habaek from his curse and damages his eye. Tired of living an artificial life, she blames Habaek for failing to let go of her as she releases the spell maintaining her life. As she dies at last, Nakbin added that she will forgive him for looking at Soah with his remaining eye which Habaek later on honored by specifically telling Soah that he'll look only at her with his one eye even though his damaged eye has already healed.
The priest informs Ha-baek that he must ascend to the throne after the red waters come seven times. He must collect the three stones and return before the last water, although there is some time before that happens. Ha-baek declares that he will return immediately, but the priest informs him that the human realm is quite interesting and that he should enjoy himself.
I like the guy, loved him in WFKBJ, but I just don't feel his charisma here, like he's not convincing me that he is a water god. He looked like he wanted to laugh and was trying to hold it in, in some scenes. Granted it's just Ep 1, I hope his acting improves soon.
I have said it before and I am saying it again....despite that I have some reservations over the main leads, I always faith in the writer and the PD and it's a relief the result is not bad at all. Nam Joo Hyuk is in his element with this light-hearted rom-com and I think it is a smart move on the part of the writer to change the setting and tone of the manhwa, only borrowing the characters and some plot with a modern and comedy twist. The fish out of the water scenes were hilarious and having nothing to watch on Mon-Tue slot, I am glad I find this show entertaining to keep up with.
Lol. His whole scene in the water kingdom had me loling for all the wrong reasons. His wig was hilarious, his costume was hilarious, even the way he walked and me dying of laughter. I think his modern hair is a step-up from the wig.
Yeah I liked it too. Actually my perception of God has always been like someone with long hair and lots of makeup and that his hair is blue being a water god is not weird to me at all. And seriously whats wrong with the way he walks. NJK is a model and knows how to walk with style. I think there is too much nitpicking abt everything he is doing. I know he is not really a good actor but I don't think the intention of the drama was to have someone like Gong Yoo with so much gravitas. I am liking the light hearted romcom feels for now. Lets see where it takes us
I think in the case of NJH here, they cast him because they wanted an akward guy.
It's a drama about a full of himself water God in modern day Seoul, who thinks he's the best ever. I think the real test will come around episodes 8- when the shift to more serious will come, then we'll see how much we can get from the leads.
It's all a bit over the top and I think it's supposed to be funny... but it mainly comes across as over-acting to me. (I feel like I can see them trying too to hard to act.) The water god too... frankly, he's just a chaebol that goes around yelling things. Nothing godly about him.
Honestly speaking, I was disappointed by the first episode. I completely loved the manhwa and expected it to be incorporated well into the drama. This is just a typical Korean drama. Maybe I'm being too harsh on just the first episode but I'm not feeling the whole Bride of the Water God themes and vibes. So-Ah was used as a living sacrifice to Habaek and he fell in love with her later. It's just off to make her his slave when she's technically suppose to be his bride. They make Habaek seem so clueless about everything though but he's pretty knowledgable. I feel like making it in modern times dilutes the beauty of the manhwa because the art was so good! It's just super typical... I have very very high standards for this drama and I'm planning on rereading the manhwa to see what the difference between the two is. Fortunately the manhwa is done so the writers know how to write out the script but unfortunately, it's not completely scanned in English. It's gonna be interesting to see how they incorporate So-Ah and Habaek's conflicting scenes later.
I'm the opposite. I enjoyed Shin Se-kyung in this role and I'm completely annoyed at Nam Joo-hyuk. I like the guy well enough, and I've enjoyed some of his past performances but he's so miscast for this role because he lacks the charisma. In spite of my immense bias towards Shin Se-kyung, I can see when she's really lacking. Some scenes in Six Flying Dragons (which I consider her best work) she had dead eyes and it frustrated me but her acting as So-ah hasn't disappointed me yet.
Oh, and downvotes are flowing like water in this recap comment section. I mentioned Nam Joo-hyuk's lack of charisma and got me like 3 downvotes.
Without hopefully saying too much and giving the whole story away. It starts with Soah being sacrificed to the Water God Habaek because of a draught in her village as specified above. She makes it through the thrashing waters of the sea and is saved by Mui. At first because she feels so lost and alone in the Water Kingdom Habaek uses it as an excuse(in my opinion) to send her back to the human world, but actually has his own reason for doing so, only for her to find out that she was more or less sold to be a sacrifice by her father in order to pay is drinking and gambling problem.
Raised alongside him somewhat after being taken from her time. Asahi was sacrificed by his mother to be the Water Gods bride after suddenly appearing. He developed a crush on her during their childhood.
At the start of the series, they get off on a rocky start. When she first meets the Water God, she thinks that he is cosplaying and calls him a pervert because he said he would make her his bride. After he takes her voice, she seems to take a great disliking to him. And after being starved due to the Water God's lack of knowledge about humans, she finds him scary.
