PreBoot: The PC's firmware initiates a power-on self test (POST) and loads firmware settings. This pre-boot process ends when a valid system disk is detected. Firmware reads the master boot record (MBR), and then starts Windows Boot Manager.

Here's a summary of the boot sequence, what will be seen on the display, and typical boot problems at that point in the sequence. Before you start troubleshooting, you have to understand the outline of the boot process and display status to ensure that the issue is properly identified at the beginning of the engagement. Select the thumbnail to view it larger.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, try to start the computer in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. If either of these options works, use Event Viewer to help identify and diagnose the cause of the boot problem. To view events that are recorded in the event logs, follow these steps:

To troubleshoot problems that affect services, do a clean boot by using System Configuration (msconfig).Select Selective startup to test the services one at a time to determine which one is causing the problem. If you can't find the cause, try including system services. However, in most cases, the problematic service is third-party.

If the computer starts in Disable Driver Signature mode, start the computer in Disable Driver Signature Enforcement mode, and then follow the steps that are documented in the following article to determine which drivers or files require driver signature enforcement:Troubleshooting boot problem caused by missing driver signature (x64)

Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is a recovery environment that can repair common causes of unbootable operating systems. WinRE is based on Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE), and can be customized with additional drivers, languages, Windows PE Optional Components, and other troubleshooting and diagnostic tools. By default, WinRE is preloaded into the Windows 10 and Windows 11 for desktop editions (Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education) and Windows Server 2016, and later, installations.

You can customize WinRE by adding packages (Windows PE Optional Components), languages, drivers, and custom diagnostic or troubleshooting tools. The base WinRE image includes these Windows PE Optional Components:

The number of packages, languages, and drivers is limited by the amount of memory available on the PC. For performance reasons, minimize the number of languages, drivers, and tools that you add to the image.

During the specialize configuration pass, the WinRE image file is copied into the recovery tools partition, so that the device can boot to the recovery tools even if there's a problem with the Windows partition.

Add the baseline WinRE tools image (winre.wim) to a separate partition from the Windows and data partitions. This enables your users to use WinRE even if the Windows partition is encrypted with Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption. It also prevents your users from accidentally modifying or removing the WinRE tools.

Store the recovery tools in a dedicated partition, directly after the Windows partition. This way, if future updates require a larger recovery partition, Windows will be able to handle it more efficiently by adjusting the Windows and recovery partition sizes, rather than having to create a new recovery partition size while the old one remains in place.

In order to boot Windows RE directly from memory (also known as RAM disk boot), a contiguous portion of physical memory (RAM) which can hold the entire Windows RE image (winre.wim) must be available. To optimize memory use, manufacturers should ensure that their firmware reserves memory locations either at the beginning or at the end of the physical memory address space.

I'm working on a Windows 7 computer. The owner reports that they believe the computer has been infected by malware and that they had an overseas company attempt to fix the problem but that something they did rendered the computer unable to boot.

Take a look that the properties of each file and you'll notice the names are random and they are digitally signed by the Microsoft Certificate Authority. Upon reboot the .SYS files will actually disappear once they have served their intended purpose, which is to remove malware at reboot.

I even tried manually uninstalling all the Xen PV drivers, deleted the xenfilt registry entries (per some blog I ran across on how to completely remove xentools), and disabled the Xen services, but that only resulted in an immediate (after normal restart) BSOD with the same error message, so that's also a no-go.

If you are following the CTS guide from above (you should be), you will take a boot trace with the following command, xbootmgr -trace boot -traceflags base+latency+dispatcher -stackwalk profile+cswitch+readythread -notraceflagsinfilename -postbootdelay 10

A few things should should jump out at you, first the boot process is broken out into very distinct phases. CTS did an AMAZING job of breaking them out, you can read about it here. Something else to notice, the red arrow is a dead giveaway, that seems like a major part of our boot time is spent during the Winlogon session. Now we have something to target in trying to reduce our boot time. Finally you should notice that we can tell exactly how long our boot time is taking, 119 seconds.

Tailored for developing enterprise applications using Spring Framework and Spring Boot, the new generation of Spring Tools provides world-class development support for your Spring applications. Our tools have deep knowledge of Spring built in.

However, there seems to be very little software which can actually fix a non-booting Windows 10 system. While loads of software vendors claims to fix such issues, in practice, I have yet to find a reliable tool to do this. Back in the days of Windows XP, there was the excellent ERD Commander which could fix a lot of XP boot issues either by file replacement, registry fix or system restore. However, no such tool seems to exist for Win 10.

  • Run floppy-based diagnostic tools from CDROM drives. More and more PCs are shipped without floppy drives these days, and it is such a royal pain when you need to run diagnostic tools on them.

  • Free yourself from the slow loading speed of the floppy drive. Even if you do have a floppy drive, it is still much much faster to run your diagnostic tools from the CDROM drive, rather than wait for the tool to load from the floppy drive.

  • Consolidate as many diagnostic tools as possible into one bootable CD. Wouldn't you like to avoid digging into the dusty box to look for the right floppy disk, but simply run them all from a single CD? Then the Ultimate Boot CD is for you!

  • Run Ultimate Boot CD from your USB memory stick. A script on the CD prepares your USB memory stick so that it can be used on newer machines that supports booting from USB devices. You can access the same tools as you would from the CD version.
