"Proxy Switcher and Manager" extension brings the power of proxy management to your browser. The UI for changing proxies is very intuitive. It is very close to the Firefox proxy manager window. The extension is designed such that no resource is used while the panel is closed. This is probably the lightest proxy switcher add-on in the market.
1. No Proxy Mode: Your browser bypasses all system-wide level proxies and connects you directly to the internet. This is useful when there is a network issue caused by an external proxy tool
2. System Proxy Mode: Your browser uses whatever proxy your system is using. Sometimes you have an external software that manages your system-level proxy. Using this option allows the browser to follow the same proxy configuration.
3. Auto-detect Proxy Mode: Your browser automatically detects the proxy settings for your network
4. Manual Mode: You are going to explicitly define proxy server for each scheme. There are four schemes to consider: HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and Other types of network requests. Using manual tab, you can specify different proxies for each scheme.
5. PAC Script Mode: This is the most powerful way to handle proxy settings of your browser. Basically by writing a PAC script (which is a JavaScript function) you can control routing based on host or url of the request. As of version 0.1.2, the badge text displays the number of failed resources. Opening the panel, you can check these resources by pressing "Error Log" button. Using this new tool, you can modify your PAC script to support custom proxy setting for the failed resources.
I have been looking for a proxy switcher/extension for Safari but can't find it. Is there a reason why there are no proxy switcher extension in Safari? Also if one wants to develop an extension like that is it possible to do so?
One way would be to place the Network Proxy app in your gnome panel. Just left-click and drag System->Preferences->Network Proxy and drop it on your gnome panel somewhere. Create proxy profiles in the Network Proxy application by clicking "Location->New Location" and defining each proxy profile (each of them will have a unique name in the Location drop down menu). It should then take very few clicks to switch between network proxies.

To save your first profile, just fill the IP and port textboxes and choose a name for your profile. Now click on the save button. To save a new profile, just update IP and port addresses and select a new name and press the save button once again.

If a resource in the current tab fails to load, badge number increases by one. You can see the list of failed resources by opening the panel and pressing the "Error" button. This button only appears if there is at least one failure.

This option controls whether DNS lookups for SOCKS v5 clients happen on the client or on the proxy server side. If anonymity is important to you, it is recommended to turn this option on when the proxy type is SOCKS version 5. This way, resolving hostnames to IP addresses are taken place in the SOCKS server instead of your network
Yes, open the toolbar panel. At the bottom of the panel, there are 3 links to actually check the proxy setting from outside. You can check your new IP address, Geo location and even you can check your actual DNS resolution chain.
Storing profiles are available on two tabs (Manual Proxy and PAC Script). Once information is filled in the boxes, simply press the apply button. All the data is stored and can be accessed later by pressing the drop-down arrow button next to the textbox.
It really depends on your needs. If you want full anonymity, always use "Manual" mode with a SOCKS server (Leave other fields empty). If you want to maximum speed, then go with "Automatic" mode and introduce a PAC file to unblocked certain websites or hosts. Always use "Check External IP" and "DNS Leakage" button on the panel to make sure the configuration works as expected.
This option forces the Firefox version to resolve hostnames from the remote SOCKS server. Note that this option is only active when proxy type is "SOCKS4" or "SOCKS5". This option can prevent DNS leakage. You can verify it by using the DNS leakage tool listed in the popup.
