Andthis link was provided in another post and I assumed it meant this card has something to do with a driver of the line of an MT76x driver which I thought I found and I installed it and I don't see any changes when clicking on the LUCI option Network and the Wireless option is missing.

I am working with an Espressobin box that had no wifi as delivered and getting the wifi up, getting the Wifi option under Network and figuring out the driver this device needs is not meshing in my inexperienced brain ....

Checking USB IDs is one thing, just testing a very modern (kernel 5.0 or newer) linux live system on an x86_64 system would be the easiest option - that will reveal which drivers feels responsible for it (at worst you'll have to provide the necessary firmware yourself).

The way it played out is I asked originally for which USB wifi dongle could I feel comfortable that was supported by OpenWRT. The github link was provided for me and I ordered the exact model number from the list on githum, the Alfa one.

It sadly not uncommon (at all) that vendors 'recycle' USB IDs for very different hardware, using the same model name or not. Testing and debugging this is considerably easier on a full featured desktop distro (Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, Mandriva, Ubuntu, ...) than an embedded distro like OpenWrt - the former provides all options at once (and all debugging facilities you might envision), for the later you need to know what you need to install - not even considering that most (driver- and kernel) development happens on x86_64, which means you're more likely to encounter arch specific issues on MIPS or ARM than on x86_64 (leave that until you know what you're dealing with).

OK, here is my situation. I am a very basic OpenWRT user and asked for suggestions for a Network File Server and it was suggested to buy this Espressobin box and this network card. I am so far over my head, I can't see the surface. The OpenWRT routers that I have set up for my family are my only Linux systems. I would not know what to do with s desktop Linux system if it was gifted to me. Sorry but most of the time I weed through this stuff - this one is a little harder.

It will NOT work in OSX 10.14.1.I am running 10.14.1 and it will not recognize this adapter or the AWUS1900. I ran OSX 10.11 in a virtual machine on my Macbook Pro running 10.14.1 and the network adapter is recognized in the virtual machine with the older OS. They need to update their software for 10.14.1.

I can't get the wireless utility to run under 10.14 either. Just installed the new driver and the utility won't open up with the internal Wi-Fi on or off. It worked great before I upgraded. I hope there's a fix for this coming as I'm on a boat in the Bahamas and really need the boost!

Ok, the fix is out now but I am not sure if it was posted publicly yet. E-mail support, they are amazing. They fixed the issue and it is working great on 10.14.1 now. That was the fastest support turn around with a software update I have ever experienced!

Hi, I have AWUS036NH properly enabled in monitor mode in Kali Linux. However when I use airodump-ng wlan0 no BSSID results are shown. I succeeded once, but since then nothing gets displayed. I have waited until 20 min and no results at all. What should we do? Is that behavior normal?

Thank you

Here's the problem. When I plug the adapter into the USB port (doesn't matter which one) and load the drivers, the adapter just cycles on and off. Meaning it appears and disappears on the computer constantly at a rate of about once per second. If you have the device manager open, it appears and disappears under network adapters. I've tried every driver I can find... same result. I even let windows choose the driver from Windows update... same. I did a complete system restore (using a different hard drive) back to factory new condition... made no difference. Tried a different adapter, did the same thing. Is there some sort of incompatibility with this presario and the 8187 chipset?

"The Realtek RTL8187 Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port. You should disconnect the device."

I worked around this problem by purchasing a powered usb hub from best buy.

I've tried the latest drivers from Realtek as well... I've tried a total of 17 different drivers... new ones, old ones, XP drivers, Vista drivers, win7 drivers. The ones that will load on my system all have the same effect. the constant cycling on and off about once a second.

The ports are working properly. My keyboard and mouse are both USB. I have a Linksys USB adapter that works just fine in any of the ports. It seems to be some sort of incompatibility with the Realek chipset and/or drivers. The 'cycling' effect does not occur until after the drivers are loaded. If you plug the device in without any drivers loaded, it doesn't cycle on and off.

That means that Alfa has produced some drivers that have issues. I would return it for another brand. That is a shame. I had heard the Alfa was supposed to be a pretty good device.I have never used the brand before. Which OS are you using?

I could understand if one of these adapters produced this problem, but three of them? Three different adapters reacted the same when plugged into any of the USB ports. The constant cycling on and off. Could they simply be drawing too much current from the port? They are supposed to be rated at 500ma (different from 1000mw), but who knows?

Im looking for the same... I read that if you start up your computer pressing the keys 2 and 3 at the same time you can boot ondemand in 32 bit architecture, then you can install the card... but I have been trying to install it but had no success yet... please if any one knows how to install this card on muntain lion, please share

I will also say that the rtl8187l works with 10.8+ but only with KisMac. KisMac does not allow you to connect to networks though. I plugged in the RTL8187L and opened up the Network Settings preference pane and it could not be detected.

I forgot to mention you can buy an ALFA R36 to use with the RTL8187L to make it compatible with Mac 10.8+, Windows 8, 7, XP as it uses a localhost based interface through ethernet or WLAN. It might be out of the price of most people. About $55.00 USD

To all people: I received my Alfa AWUS036H yesterday and I was sad that mac os x 10.8.3 (a so to windows 8 in parallels) didn't work with it. In windows 7 at the same parallels, no problem despite monitor software was not able to be installed, but signal of wifi increased a lot. Today I downloaded ( _en/07_downloads/01_windows.php?sn=502) a new drive and monitor (beta, may not work to someone). In a forum ( -awus036nh-awus036neh-mountain-lion-driver- utility.564/), they ask to delete former drive/monitor and install the new one. At mediatek site, they are confuse (maybe translation troubles), but you have USB RT 3x7x (Alfa AWUS036H uses RT 3070 chip) drive. After click in this option, they ask your name and e-mail to start download. I installed the software and re-started mac. In Applications, there was a new folder - Ralink wireless utility. Clicking on WirelessUtility, a new icon appeared at top bar. So, then you click and select open wireless utility. Then, you conect usb with Alfa AWUS036H. Worked, monitor showed a increased wifi signal. Then, you can create one profile, save password, etc. Good luck!

Realtek has stopped the RTL8187L support for the drivers after 10.6.8. (The last version for Realtek Utility was 1.5.7 2008 ) I am not aware on any tricks to make an Alfa AWUS036H work on 10.8. If anyone does, please let me know.

Ok, but this driver it's working. Maybe without all funcionality, but it worked and increased wifi signal. My point is related to old antenna and new OS, or (my case) a wrong chinese web purchase: the battle was not lost at all...

The issue is not that it works for you, the issue is that if someone reads your post and try to install a Ralink RT3070 driver for a RTL8187L, nothing is going to work and it's going to confuse more people than necessary.

I am trying to get my alfa awus036h working as wlan1 on my AR150. It shows up when i lsusb but not in ifconfig. Also the power light on the alfa is off. So Im kinda thinking its something with the power. I was reading over this gpio stuff today but not really grasping what needs to be done.

The below driver is installed for the device. Can you explain the 3 gpio options better to me please? for power over usb what should it be set to?

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:8187 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter

You are missing two sections for your Alfa USB device in this file. There should be sections that are similar to the following, assuming you want to use the USB device as WWAN (and you probably do, that way you always have a WLAN available on the internal device). I replaced most of my values with the variable [value]. You may need to change others too. The option type and path you need to know. Most of the rest can be backed into knowing the STAtion you want to connect to on the WWAN side.
