Hey folks! Matt Carter here, welcome back to the Latona Times.

As the apex of summer approaches, amidst the political noise and pictures of cats with their heads stuck in boxes, my back-East friends’ Facebook feeds are teeming with posts about heatwaves, trudging through walls of humidity, and how their apartments don’t have air conditioning. Meanwhile, I’m in Seattle, where the sun goes down around 8:30pm right now, in shorts and a hoodie at night, enjoying a cold beer on my rooftop with friends.

It serves as a reminder that, if there’s one thing I don’t miss about the East coast, it’s the summers in NYC.

Granted, there are at least two—the summers AND the winters—but I’ve got to save some material for future newsletters.

The subway commute used to be especially trying. Living about 5 minutes from the subway, my sweat-drenched walk was spent pining for the Dyson hand-dryer-like air conditioning on the Q train. Upon exiting the train—somehow miraculously avoiding hypothermia—and emerging from an incredibly hot, dank subway station, I would be thrust headfirst into a dense crowd of similarly disoriented, hurried people who clearly had very important places to be. Such was the daily odyssey to Times Square.

All that, and it’s really difficult to find a great beer in a city where a Bud Light costs $6.

So, count your blessings, folks. We’ve got a helluva good thing going on here; it could be much worse.

Speaking of beer, August looks to be a pretty killer month at the Latona.

First up, we’ve got our “Fort George Deconstructed 3-Way” event on Wednesday, August 10th at 6:30pm. Please note again that, due to forces outside of my control, the date has changed to August 10th. In case you’re not in the know, we’ll have Fort George’s collaboration 3-Way IPA on tap alongside offerings from their co-conspirators, Melvin Brewing and Barley Brown’s. It’s a fun way to try a little bit of everything that went into the collaboration, and a portion of the evening’s proceeds will go to the Roosevelt High School band, so come early and drink merrily (and responsibly).

Our Summer Beer Series continues on Monday, August 15th, when Ashtown Brewing will be releasing a Citra Pale brewed specially for the three pubs. Join us for dinner in the loft with head brewer Jarrett Skreen at 6:30pm, where you’ll be treated to three courses and four Ashtown schooners. Tickets are still available, only $40 per person!

Also, I don’t want speak out of turn, but I heard there might be brisket. Brisket, folks.

On the music front, our weekly Jazz Happy Hour roars on all month led by bassist Phil Sparks and his rotating cast of musicians, every Fridayfrom 5pm-7pm. Things tend to turn up around 5pm, so get in early so you can score a seat at the bar. Also, the Wildhares continue their Latona residency at 7pm on Sunday, August 14th and again on August 28th, so come on in for dinner and a night of bluegrass.

Finally, the Latona turns 29 years old on Saturday, August 20th. We’ll be firing up the BBQ and celebrating in style with casks from local breweries like Georgetown, Holy Mountain, Naked City, and Stoup. The exact time is still to be determined and I’ll nail down more details as we get closer, but I expect it’s going to be an all-day soirée, and I’m really looking forward to seeing you there.

Soak that in for a second and say it slowly with me—29 years. That’s amazing for any business, but even more so when the place becomes a neighborhood fixture. So much of that is because you made the Latona your home away from home, and I’m sure that you’re as honored as I am to be part of the history. We’re happy and fortunate to call you all friends.

’Til next time, cheers!
