to Latinum Verbum Diei
Theme for this month: Latin in German
As some of you know, I have starting taking German this year. Though
German is not a Romance language, even from the first few classes I
was excited by connections with Latin--”das Fenster” is “window” in
German, very similar to Latin's “fenestra!” I figured that this
month, I would feature words of this sort.
caballus, caballi, m.
Definition: a horse, esp. a riding-horse or a pack-horse
Gorgoneus caballus: Pegasus
Sententia: No sentence for this week, sorry!
From a Latin derivation of this word, “caballarius,” meaning
“horseman,” comes the German word “Kavalier,” “gentleman.” Also from
“caballarius” is “Chevalier,” the Old French word for “knight.”
I apologize for the brevity of this LVD and its lateness—the semester
for us is just wrapping up, and I've been quite busy. The next
installment of this month will be posted on Sunday, however!
