Readers,

How to apply a font style (e.g. bold) to a row of two columns in a table?

\begin{tabular}{ll}
\emph{text&moretext}\\
\end{tabular}

causes an error.

You have to apply the formatting to each cell separately:

\begin{tabular}{ll}
  \emph{text} & \emph{more text}\\
\end{tabular}

There are ways around this in some cases, where one can apply a "style" to a row or column. See, for example, some discussion on this in An improved \rowstyle that takes the cell contents as an argument. The tabu package provides a means to apply a row style if needed, but has a slightly difference interface to that of standard LaTeX tabular.

Font changes must be done separately in each cell.
