What exactly is a trapped PDF?

After "\usepackage{hyperref}" you're able to fill various options in
"\hypersetup{...}" including "pdftrapped", to be true or false. When
setting it to true, "Trapped: Yes" will be appearing in the PDF
properties (Properties, tab Advanced). What's the difference between a
trapped and non-trapped PDF? Are there any (dis)advantages?

Slightly. Setting the option to True, will that configure the document
in such a way that it is trapped? Or could the document still be
Untrapped? I never saw 'ugly white patches' in printed untrapped
documents..
