Hi everyone,

this is not specifically a LaTeX question, but it bugs me, and maybe it
is useful for others, too: which of the following abbreviations are
correct (within the main text, and at the beginning of a sentence):

(a) ...see Fig. 3.2 and ... correct?
(b) Fig. 3.2 shows ... or: Figure 3.2 shows ...

(c) ... see Eq. 3.2 and ... correct?
(d) Eq. 3.2 shows ... or: Equation 3.2 shows ...

(e) "Table" is never abbreviated, right?!

Do I always put these words in capital letters? If not, when do I use
the lower case?

Thanks a bunch,
Ralfito

Personally, I don't like abbreviating Figure, Equation, or Table ...
and I always capitalize them in the text - using the entire word seems
much more "formal" and appropriate.

But, I have seen, for example, "please refer to Fig. 3.2 for ..." and
"as shown in Eq. 3.2, the conductivity ..." ... but, honestly, it
always bugs me (to me, it doesn't look as nice), and the "savings" of
the few letters is not really worth it.

But, you know, it's a moot point in LaTeX ... LaTeX can do all that for
you. Look at the typedref package:

http://www.tug.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/typedref.html

(formerly saferef) ... all you have to do is type \figureref{figure
label} and LaTeX takes care of everything else. It's really quite nice.

Matt, thanks for your input.
It looks as if I'll install another package pretty soon :-)

Cheers,
