any idea how I set a color for a poster-background, what is the
command for this.

THanks, I am using the this template in pgposterexample.tex,

if you google "pgposterexample" it will appear as attachment in this
forum,

Nothing to do with posters. To set the page background,

\usepackage[svgnames]{xcolor}% or whatever option[s] are appropriate
...
\pagecolor{HotPink}% or whatever colour you need

I assume that most poster packages honour this...

It means you have not got pagecolor.sty installed. 
This is a standard part of the full TeX distribution, but perhaps you have an old or partial installation.

If it is missing, download it from CTAN at http://www.ctan.org/pkg/pagecolor
Put it in your personal TeX folder (see instructions at http://research.ucc.ie/latex/#updates)

You should use your TeX distribution's package manager to install this. For manual installation, it's available from CTAN. Also see the following posts on TeX.SE that are related:
